World War I poetry holds a special place in our hearts here.

Raised by a woman for whom the words of Rupert Brooke (“If I should die think only this of me…”) and Keats (“Seasons of mist and mellow fruitfulness”) were always fresh in her mind, the sight of this signature made me gasp. The title of this little book, “To My Mother,” made me smile.
And this, for me, is why books are one of the best investments you can make. We love the printed words on the page. We are both touched and educated by them. We feel as though the past is still with us, like waves that ripple through time, bringing the ideas and passions of men like Siegfried Sassoon into our minds, our living rooms and conversations.
But one of the most startling and enriching aspect of these books is how they reinforce the bonds forged between people, whose shared love of literature shapes us, teaches us to be both more sensitive and more resilient, more analytical and critical and also gentler, more compassionate and more forgiving.
It’s as if you open that Austen, that Dickens or that Sassoon and as the light bounces off the print into your eyes, you are visited by the ones you have lost and that is when you realise that in a way, they never left you at all.

This is E.C. Rare Books’ first exhibition in London since 2019.
Says Iona Fielding of ECRB, “We are very excited by the range and quality of our collection.” Seen here, Richard Smart and enjoying some pre-show banter about Edward Jenner’s extraordinary work on vaccine development. Both the content - initialled by Jenner himself - and Richard’s eccentrically brilliant, one of a kind, clamshell box make this volume a show-stopper.

Firsts London 📚 Day One | We are finishing setup and the crates have been put away. Visitors are already arriving and an army of champagne glasses had appeared in readiness for tonight’s event.
It’s approaching 3:00pm as exhibitors put the finishing touches to displays. After the intense focus and quiet conversation will come the clink of glasses and animated questions about vellum covers, gold tooling and signed editions. We can’t wait.
Thank you firstslondon for staging this extraordinary events.

A woman came into the store with ten books from her childhood. The books needed a little TLC and a pot of glue. Their reader needed to tell us a story….

She told us how she and her childhood friend, Debbie, had loved reading these books. The books travelled across the street to her friend and back again, as they took turns with each volume.

She wondered where her friend was now and if she also had good memories of these stories and the friend she shared them with.

She told us that Debbie had also moved to Vancouver but that they had lost touch years ago. How would she find her again?

I suggested that I could post this photo on our social media and maybe we could help them find each other. I hope that Debbie will see one of my posts and be moved to contact the bindery.

I really hope these two girls have a chance to meet up and talk about what they’re reading now… 💗📚

This jewel came into the store today. The handwritten notes are in Rumanian but the book itself is in Russian. Not the Russian print of today, but from 1855, 62 years before its owner left Eastern Europe for Canada. That was when our lovely visitor’s grandfather found out what was brewing in the Balkans. With the annexation of Bosnia in 1908, the region continued its gradual descent into the turmoil that erupted in World War I (1914-1918).
It was such a pleasure to meet J——, whose family heirloom this is, and who talked so animatedly about the book’s history and meaning for her family.

As a book shop and bindery, we are constantly fielding questions about : what to look for when collecting? How to get started? What makes a binding special? and so on. These discussions are exciting and we are always happy to help share some wisdom with other book enthusiasts - but there just isn't enough time in the day! That is why we are happy to announce that we are now on Patreon!
Our staff are hard at work putting together an exciting and informative catalogue of content, just for you. Every week, we will feature articles, photos and videos on current projects, guides to collecting and videos designed to shed some insight into the binding process (box building, gold tooling and painting, etc.).
