🥲 Happy Friday, everyone! Our Staff Favourite this week is Emily Austin's "Is This A Cry For Help?", read by Chelsea! Chelsea says this is a drily funny story that celebrates community, literature, and stray cats.

📚 Read below for a description of the book. If you find yourself crying out for it, swing by and pick up a copy!

📖 " Darcy’s life turned out better than she could have ever imagined. She is a librarian at the local branch, while her wife Joy runs a book binding service. Between the two of them, there is no more room on their shelves with their ample book collections, various knickknacks and bobbles, and dried bouquets. Rounding out their ideal life is two cats and a sun-soaked house by the lake.

But when Darcy receives the news that her ex-boyfriend, Ben, has passed away, she spirals into a pit of guilt and regret, resulting in a mental breakdown and medical leave from the library. When she returns to work, she is met by unrest in her community and protests surrounding intellectual freedom, resulting in a call for book bans and a second look at the branch’s upcoming DEI programs.

Through the support of her community, colleagues, and the personal growth that results from examining her previous relationships, Darcy comes into her own agency and the truest version of herself. Is This a Cry for Help? not only offers a moving portrait of q***r life after coming of age but also powerfully explores questions about sexuality, community, and the importance of libraries."

📖"Longing for glamour and riches and freedom, Zelda is a young woman who chafes against her Romany identity and her family’s poverty. Everything changes when she’s lured away from working alongside her mother and aunts and other migrant workers in the to***co fields and is hired as an assistant and good luck charm to the charismatic Trixie Tormentine.

What starts out as a summer of ease and access to the unfettered wealth of the Tormentines—Trixie’s husband Jack owns the to***co farm that employs Zelda’s family and friends—unspools into dangerous displays of power and manipulation. One of the Romany family’s puppets, grandmother Puri Dai, acts as Zelda’s confidante and mentor, and warns her about the devil of the to***co fields, a harbinger of destruction.

As Zelda struggles with her simmering feelings toward the Tormentines, the devil appears to her one night in a motel parking lot. Can Puri Dai’s love pull Zelda back from the brink and into a new future? The fate of her family depends on it."

📖 "Was this just a brief skirmish, or the beginning of a thirty-year feud? In the Rubinstein family, it could go either way.

When their beloved sister passes away, Sylvia and Helen Rubinstein are unmoored. A misunderstanding about apple cake turns into a decade of stubborn silence. Busy with their own lives—divorces, dating, career setbacks, college applications, bat mitzvahs and ballet recitals—their children do not want to get involved. As for their grandchildren? Impossible."

📖 "Sometimes you walk two steps and find yourself
two alleys away, two gates away,
two hills away, two seas away,
two continents away,
or seven heavens away.

In this taut and heartbreaking debut novel, a Palestinian teenager comes of age amid escalating violence in Jerusalem. After their friend Hassan is killed by an Israeli, Aziz and Mustafa are shaken to their core, drawn into the orbit of Hassan's father—a respected community leader known for his charity and fiery speeches—as they grapple with grief, guilt, and an uncertain future. As Aziz's forbidden feelings for Dafna, a Jewish girl, deepen and his mother searches for a way to secure his safety, he's forced to confront painful truths about loss, survival, and what it means to find hope amid the ruins."
