Factory screen, or the whole opening?

The 2010 Raptor came with a small recessed SVT head unit — no CarPlay. The Kenwood eXcelon DAX800XR is direct-fit: it drops into that same opening edge to edge, so there's no cut dash and no filler panel around it.

Apple CarPlay, and a reverse camera with steering-linked guidelines that bend where the truck is actually going.

Which one should I get?

Which detector should you buy? Honestly — the one that fits how you drive and what you drive.

Uniden R9: dual antennas, front and rear arrows, built into the car and invisible. Uniden R8: same eyes, on the dash. Es**rt Redline: serious range and app connectivity.

Everything we install gets GPS lockouts and Ka-band priority, because that's what's actually in use on BC roads. Come in with the car. We'll tell you which, and why — and it won't always be the most expensive one.

Windshield mount or custom install?

A suction cup on the windshield says two things: "there's a detector in this car," and "it's worth breaking a window for."

We build them in. Front antenna behind the grille, rear at the back, hardwired power, a small display where you want it and nowhere else.

The car looks like it left the factory. It just knows more.

Will it warn me about BC's intersection cameras?

BC's intersection safety cameras use low-power radar and stereoscopic imaging — by the time a detector hears one, you're already in frame.

Which is why the good detectors don't rely on hearing them. Every one of the 140 sites is published, and detectors like the Uniden R9 carry a GPS database of them: it warns before the intersection, not at it.

Detector for the radar you can't predict. GPS for the cameras you can.

What about laser jammers?

Detectors: a clear yes. Laser jammers — the honest answer is "grey."

BC's Motor Vehicle Act doesn't prohibit installing a laser shifter. But actively defeating a police laser reading can be treated as obstructing an officer, and that's a Criminal Code matter — not a ticket.

Our approach: tell you that plainly, install what's appropriate for how and where you drive, and set it up properly. Rules change; we keep up. Ask before you buy — here or anywhere else.

He came in and asked for the whole thing. Better sound, all of it, top to bottom.

That ask is where our job actually starts. A 2024 F-150 has its own set of problems — a big cab with a lot of road in it, factory door openings that limit what will physically fit, and an owner who isn't willing to give up the back seat or the floor to get there.

So we didn't hand him a catalogue. We spec'd it.

BLAM Relax 570/690s go into the factory door locations for a real front stage. A MATCH UP 6DSP MK2 sits behind the factory radio and tunes the whole system to this cab specifically. A MATCH UP 1FX drives dual Kicker L7s in a low-profile enclosure that lives under the rear seat.

Every piece was picked because it was the right piece for this truck at the right money. Nothing oversold to pad a ticket, nothing cheaped out to hit a number.

The rear seat still folds down over it. The floor is still empty. From the driver's seat it still looks exactly like a stock F-150.

That's the difference between buying gear and having a system built.

How heavy is enforcement on the Sea to Sky?

Heavy — and not letting up.

BC Highway Patrol’s numbers from the May long weekend: 66 vehicles impounded between Lions Bay and Mount Currie — a new record, up from 60 at Labour Day — and 212 tickets written. Squamish RCMP logged 457 excessive-speed violations in 2025. Across the South Coast, 2,167 speeding tickets in a single October.

Forty over the limit is “excessive” in BC: the car goes on a truck for seven days, first offence.

A hidden, always-on detector isn’t a licence to speed. It’s smarter information for the drive — and more of that drive is being watched than there used to be.

Are radar detectors legal in BC?

The question we get asked most, answered in one word: yes.

Radar detectors are legal to own and use in a passenger vehicle in British Columbia. Nothing in the Motor Vehicle Act says otherwise. Same story in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Cross into Manitoba, or anywhere east of it, and it flips — illegal, and they can seize it. Heading south? Legal in Washington and almost every state; Virginia and DC are the holdouts.

Built into the car and hidden, it's also not a windshield ornament worth breaking a window for. But that's another week's question.
