Today’s feature is broccoli!

Did you know that broccoli continues to be our best seller? Sometimes we have a whole rack of broccoli ready for you on Saturdays, and we still sell out. 😊

Some people like the way that it has a very mild taste and doesn’t change the flavour of whatever dish or sandwich or salad you added it to. Some people like it for its delicate nature, preferring soft crunch to some of the more crisp ones. Broccoli is also one of our most finicky! After much trial and error, Chris found the perfect balance of how many seeds to put in each tray, how long to leave it in the dark to germinate, how much water to give it (hint: different amounts on different days!), and how long it takes from start to finish. Ask him anything today at the market, and you can find out just how much he knows about growing broccoli greens.

Once they’re out of germination, these alfalfa sprouts get a thorough drink from the top, to encourage those roots to dig into the soil.

Stay tuned for more behind the scenes!

I wonder what fun will be had on Saturday at the market? Come and celebrate Christmas in July with us!

This week’s behind the scenes is a video featuring our alfalfa! We start out with a layer of soil and then a sprinkling of the seeds. We cover it up with another tray, and then at the top of the pile, we add a heavy brick. The seeds stay in the dark between the trays, with a brick on top to keep all light out. They spend that time germinating… then voila! These little seedlings are so strong, they push the weight of the brick up! Listen as Chris explains in the video. You can also see their fuzzy little roots. By the time the arrive at the market, those roots will have become straight and strong, one for each sprout.

Then join us this Saturday at Marché des fermiers de Bouctouche Farmers' Market, from 8-1.

Come and take a closer look at the alfalfa on display, and notice how green it is, compared to how pale it is in the video. And let the awe sink in, that these little sprouts can join forces and push the layers apart!

Looking for a great way to get your polyphenols?

After a long wait, our Red Rambo Radish has returned!

In our fast-paced, order-it-on-demand society, sometimes we forget that there are still things that take time. Enter our adventure with this popular, healthy, radish, the Red Rambo. When we went looking for seeds last winter, we found out that all of the Canadian, organic suppliers were out of stock. It tuns out that growing radish for seed is a special process that cannot be rushed.

This week's pictures feature our two varieties of radish, the Red Rambo and the China Rose. Best known for their ability to add a burst of colour to your favourite dishes, they also enhance your food with zesty, radish flavour.

Come on by for your sample at Marché des fermiers de Bouctouche Farmers' Market on Saturday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.
