September is off to a busy start!

Orders are flying out, and it’s all hands on deck this morning at Sagebrush Native Plant Nursery! We’re loading up a beautiful selection of native plants headed to Sierra Landscaping in Kelowna for their installation at Parkinson Recreation Centre.

These plants are going to look absolutely beautiful in their new home!

We love seeing our locally grown plants head out into the community and become part of these incredible landscaping and restoration projects.

HOW IS ALL THIS SMOKE AFFECTING OUR PLANTS?

With the heavy wildfire smoke hanging over the South Okanagan, we’ve been getting questions about what all of this smoke means for our gardens, crops and nursery plants.

Unfortunately, our plants feel the effects too.

☀️ LESS SUNLIGHT = LESS GROWTH

Thick wildfire smoke acts much like a giant layer of shade cloth. It reduces the amount of sunlight reaching our plants, which means they can’t photosynthesize at their normal rate.

For our fruit trees, grapes, vegetables and flowering plants, this can mean slower growth and delayed ripening during an already short growing season.

🍃 SMOKE PARTICLES ON LEAVES

Smoke carries tiny particles that can settle onto foliage. When enough particulate matter accumulates on leaves, it can interfere with the leaf’s ability to efficiently exchange gases and capture sunlight.

💧 SO WHAT CAN WE DO?

The best thing we can do right now is support our plants through the stress:

🌱 Keep plants adequately watered
🌱 Avoid unnecessary stress such as heavy pruning
🌱 Keep an eye on newly planted and container plants—they can dry out quickly
🌱 Once the smoke clears, gently rinsing foliage can help remove accumulated dust and particles

The good news is that plants are incredibly resilient. A period of smoky weather doesn’t necessarily mean permanent damage. When the skies clear and sunlight returns, many plants can get right back to growing.

We’re watching our plants closely here at Sagebrush and doing our best to keep everything healthy through these smoky days.

Now… if Mother Nature could just send us some fresh air and a little rain, we’d be very grateful

Our hearts are with the entire Summerland community right now. We are sending our deepest thoughts, prayers, and love to everyone affected by the devastating fires. ❤️‍🩹

The smoke is extremely heavy down here in the South Okanagan, so we are keeping the nursery to very limited hours. It simply isn’t healthy for our team to be outside working in these conditions.

Before the fires, we were incredibly excited to be expanding Sagebrush Nursery — adding four new greenhouses and growing plugs to help meet the growing demand for restoration projects throughout our region.

We are still looking ahead with hope. If you’ll be needing native plant plugs for restoration work next year, please reach out and get your orders in early. We would love to help support the incredible restoration work happening across the Okanagan.

For now, our hearts are with Summerland. There has been such heartbreaking loss and devastation throughout this beautiful part of the Okanagan.

Stay safe, everyone. Take care of yourselves, check on your neighbours, and know that our thoughts are with you.

🌿 Summer Hours at Sagebrush Nursery 🌿

Just a friendly reminder that our summer hours, now through Labour Day weekend, are Tuesday to Saturday, 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM.

If you’re planning ahead for fall, now is the perfect time to stop by! We are fully stocked with trees, flowering shrubs, perennials, and everything you need to get your fall planting off to a great start.

The retail centre is absolutely loaded with beautiful plants, and we’d love to help you find the perfect additions to your yard or garden.

The Sagebrush boys have been hard at work transforming this beautiful Oliver acreage!

They removed a tired, unappealing lawn and completely reimagined the front of this stunning farmhouse. With carefully selected native plants, beautiful paving stones, and thoughtfully placed landscape lighting, they’ve turned the entrance into something truly special.

The transformation speaks for itself. It’s amazing what thoughtful design, hard work, and a passion for creating beautiful outdoor spaces can accomplish.

What was once ordinary is now a welcoming masterpiece that will continue to grow more beautiful with every season
