The Crafter’s Market: Yarn Bombing Maker Guidelines
To make sure our installation looks beautiful, fits the trees properly, and stands up to the winter weather, please follow these simple crafting guidelines:
1. Approved Yarn Types
Best Choice: 100% Acrylic Yarn (Medium/Worsted Weight - #4)
Why: Acrylic retains its bright colors, dries quickly after rain or snow, does not sag heavily when wet, and is highly moth-resistant.
Alternative: Acrylic/Wool Blends
Why: Safe to use as long as the acrylic content is high.
❌ Avoid: 100% cotton, 100% pure unwashed wool, silk, or heavy blanket yarns. They absorb too much water, become incredibly heavy, sag, and can trap unwanted moisture against the tree bark.
2. Color Palette
Theme: Bright, joyful, and festive!
Colors: High-contrast stripes, variegated yarns, or solid neon/bright tones (reds, greens, blues, pinks, yellows, purples).
Note: Avoid using solid dark browns, greys, or blacks, as they blend into the tree bark and will not be visible to spectators during the evening parade.
3. Exact Panel Dimensions
Because Main Street tree trunks vary slightly in thickness, we are crafting modular panels that we can easily stitch together on-site.
Standard Panel Width: 18 inches (45 cm)
This width wraps comfortably around the average local tree trunk.
Standard Panel Length: 36 inches (3 feet / 90 cm)
A 3-foot length is easy to handle. We will stack multiple panels vertically to cover taller trunks.
4. Stitch Selection
Recommended Stitches: Garter stitch, ribbing (2x2), or simple double crochet.
Tension: Keep your stitches relatively loose and stretchy. A stretchy panel is much easier to adjust, leaves room for the tree to breathe, and handles wind and moisture better.
5. Finishing Touches
Leave Long Tails: When casting off or changing colors, leave a 12-inch tail of yarn attached. Our installation crew can use these long tails to tie the panels directly to the trees without needing extra hardware!
