When you hear the word “caretaker,” who do you picture?
Maybe a mother caring for her children.
Someone looking after an aging parent.
A person supporting a sick partner.
But caretaking doesn’t always look like that.
Sometimes, you’re the person everyone calls when something goes wrong.
You manage everyone’s emotions at work, then come home and manage everyone there too.
You remember the appointments, birthdays, groceries, permission slips and things nobody else even notices need doing.
You check on everyone else, but rarely does anyone stop and ask how YOU'RE doing.
Maybe every job you’ve ever chosen has involved helping, supporting, teaching, healing or caring for other people.
I know I have!
Maybe you’ve been the strong one for so long that you don’t even recognize it as caretaking anymore. It’s simply who you’ve learned to be.
But somewhere along the way, you became so good at taking care of everyone else that you forgot how to take care of yourself.
You don’t need to have children to be a caretaker.
You don’t need to be caring for someone who is sick.
You don’t need the official title.
If you are constantly carrying the needs, feelings and responsibilities of everyone around you,
You might be the caretaker.
And you deserve to be cared for, too.
Does this sound like you?
