Yes. We use leatherfern. A lot. 🌿😂

There. We said it.

And before anyone stages an intervention in the comments, there’s actually more to that choice than you might think.

We believe flowers — and greenery — mean something.

In the traditional language of flowers, ferns have long carried symbolism connected to sincerity, fascination, magic and secret bonds.

And if you know anything about us, you know that matters here.

Our philosophy is The Language of Flowers. Reimagined™ — the idea that the things we put into an arrangement shouldn’t be chosen only because they’re trendy or photograph well.

Sometimes, they’re there because of what they say.

So yes:

We use leatherfern.

We also use it because it’s affordable. It’s reliable. It’s long-lasting. It gives beautiful coverage and structure without unnecessarily driving up the cost of an arrangement.

Could we replace it with Italian ruscus, eucalyptus, salal, pittosporum or premium greenery in every design?

Absolutely.

Would that increase the cost of the arrangement for our customer?

Also absolutely.

Sometimes we would rather put those extra dollars into the flowers themselves — while using a greenery that is hardworking, long-lasting, beautiful and has something to say.

And because this is the internet, here is our official disclaimer:

We are not floral influencers. 😂
We are not claiming our way is the way.
We are not saying every florist should use leatherfern.
We are not saying every arrangement needs leatherfern.

We’re simply florists who have been doing this for a long time, and this is our way.

Sometimes we use leatherfern.
Sometimes we use premium greens.
Sometimes we use both.
Sometimes we don’t use greenery at all.

We choose what makes sense for the meaning, the design, the budget and the person receiving it.

Because to us, greenery isn’t just something you stick underneath the flowers.

Sometimes my sister makes sympathy flowers…

Sometimes she makes a friggin’ turtle. 🐢😂

Plot twist: she actually made this for the funeral of a woman who collected turtles.

I think that’s one of the most beautiful parts of what we do. Sometimes the most meaningful tribute isn’t traditional—it simply reflects the person whose life is being celebrated. 💚

Not every day in the flower shop is filled with birthdays and celebrations.

Some days are quieter.

Some arrangements carry memories, love, gratitude, and the weight of saying goodbye.

Creating sympathy flowers is a responsibility we never take lightly. Every flower is placed with intention, in the hope that it offers a small measure of comfort when words simply aren’t enough.
