Finding beauty on a bitterly cold day... These colours and textures bring me joy. So does re-using the rice from our sensory bin from last year. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Other things bringing me joy today: coffeeโ˜•, knit sweaters ๐Ÿชก, wool socks ๐Ÿ‘, sunshine streaming in through the windows โ˜€๏ธ.

Hey educators! Sorry to bother you during your time off, but if you have a moment, I would love your suggestions!

You know preschoolers and kindergarten kids so well, especially in group environments...

Do you have wooden toy suggestions that would work well in classrooms? Or ideas for how children could use wooden toys imaginatively and creatively and collaboratively in a classroom setting?

Also, I know from experience that you don't have a huge budget for classroom spending, and many of you pay out of your own pockets for 'extras'. Would you consider wooden toys worthwhile? How could parents and creators like me help with developing more eco-friendly classrooms?

Thank you!

How many toys fit that description?

Wooden toys are amazing for so many reasons (think: durability, safety, sustainability, etc...), but especially for the calming way they connect children to nature. Without being over-stimulated, children explore the texture of the wood grain and feel the weight of the hardwood. They have space to add their own voices and sound effects while creating and recreating stories in they're imaginative play.

Add to the wood these harmonious colours with diverse skin tones (in non-toxic acrylic paint), and you have calm, peaceful, and inspiring toys!

It's family portrait season, right? ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ

This custom set was ordered by a group of friends to give as a gift to this family as they move out of town.

What a sweet and thoughtful gift!

Btw, this would also make a great anniversary gift. I know I would be so pleasantly surprised if my husband gifted me a set of our family (if I wasn't the one painting them and all...) ๐Ÿ˜†

Fairy Tree House in the garden, ready for some outdoor play on a cloudy day.

A tip for using your tree house outdoors: use a placemat or potholder under the base to lift it off the ground a wee bit. This means less clean-up later... We have a cork potholder from IKEA that works really well.

What would your kids add to this scenario? Fairies? Gnomes? Dragons? Dinosaurs? Insects?

๐Ÿ’– All the scoops and cups and ladybugs and rainbows ๐Ÿ’–

This little sensory play set up is so inviting! Imagine what counting and sorting activities one could create from this colorful collection of wooden bits and dyed peas.

Not only is it fun to scoop and pour, it's also fantastic for development of fine motor control and hand-eye coordination.

This 18-piece cup/ scoop/ counting creature set is going up on the website today!

๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿฆ„ Sensory Bin How-To ๐Ÿฆ„๐ŸŒˆ

I make a lot of sensory bins for my youngest. She loves pouring and scooping and rolling and imagining. Playing with different textures helps with regulation and building fine motor skills (sometimes I play along just cause it's soothing to let the peas fall through my fingers- play therapy isn't just for kids!) These bins are also great for teaching kids how to use materials wisely (aka not throw peas all over the floor ๐Ÿคฃ) - just ask my sister-in-law...

Hers how to make a sensory bin:
Pour some dry whole peas or dry chickpeas into a bowl. Add a lot of food colouring. Add a splash of vinegar (I don't really know why, but it helps the color to spread more evenly). Spread out onto a baking tray and bake for a few minutes at low temp till dry (3-5 minutes). Cool on a plate or in a container while you repeat the process with another color.

We used a cardboard box from our recycling bin to put the peas in for play time, then added scoops, cups and peg dolls. I'll be storing the peas in a large mason jar when Miss 4-year old decides she's done playing with them for the day.

I'm going to order more wooden scoops and cups and put them up on www.daffodiltoys.ca so you can use them too! I'd also love to stay making wood trays for sensory play.

If you make this with your kids, please send me a photo of their creative play. I'd love to see what they come up with!

โ‡๏ธ Just some fairies in a bowl โ‡๏ธ

These three sets (Rosey Maidens and Garden Fairies in blue and green) are making their way over to two sweet little girls this weekend. I had never placed the three sets beside each other before, but their colors look so great together!
