✨ Congratulations to the 2022 Booker Prize winner Shehan Karunatilaka for The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida. ✨

The Man Booker Prize is the leading literary award in the English speaking world. As someone who loves literary fiction, I pay lots of attention to the short list every year and most certainly to the winner. While I have not yet sourced a copy of The Seven Moons of Maali Alemida for the Bouq Shop, I do have some fantastic Booker Prize winners from the recent past. Check them out…

The Luminaries, Eleanor Catton - 2013
The Sellout, Paul Beatty - 2016
Milkman, Anna Burns - 2018
The Testaments, Margaret Atwood - 2019

Braiding Sweetgrass is such a special book. Robin Wall Kimmerer captures the purest moments of life while also teaching the reader so much about plants through indigenous wisdom and scientific knowledge. She had me swimming in nostalgia and yearning for afternoons spent running through grass taller than I was, picking wild raspberries down the street, and finding forest clearings that would become “forts”. I put it down feeling grateful for our beautiful home and the abundance it provides. We are so lucky and need to do more to make sure it doesn’t become just a memory.
Happy Harvest everyone 🌽 🌾🌻

🍂 Autumn Recommendations Series 🍂

What’s your favourite book? For many of us it’s just too hard to choose one. But when pressed, A Fine Balance is what I tell people. When asked for a recommendation, my hands always dance over to Rohinton Mistry’s epic narrative.

Most people don’t take me up on it because:
1. It is long. But, it is worth it. And, my guess is you won’t be able to put it down.
2. It is bleak. But it is insightful, compassionate and moving.

Set during Indira Ghandi’s 1975 government-declared State of Emergency, A Fine Balance follows four characters thrown together as flat mates. In these four lives we see the impact of government cruelty and corruption - forced sterilization, involuntary resettlement, caste discrimination - but, at the same time the resilience of the human spirit.

If you are a character driven reader, you will love this book. I truly felt that these people were my friends by the end. I cried because it heartbreaking, but I also cried because it was over.

I will always have a copy of this book available at the Bouq Shop. DM if you’re interested!
