This week’s Fascinating Find - Beyond the Rink by: Alexandra Giancarlo, Janice Forsyth, and Braden Te Hiwi.

A bit about the book:

In 1951, the Sioux Lookout Black Hawks from Pelican Lake Indian Residential School embarked on a promotional tour of Ottawa and Toronto after winning the Thunder Bay district hockey championship.

In Beyond the Rink, authors Alexandra Giancarlo, Janice Forsyth, and Braden Te Hiwi work with surviving team members to uncover the complex legacy behind that tour—celebrating the players’ achievements while revealing the realities of residential schools and the complicated role hockey played in their lives and in Canada’s history.

Thank you to our wonderful community for donating almost $400 worth of points to The Rainbow Club. We've matched these donations with another $300 in points to help Harry buy even more books. And along with these points, our publisher partners have donated four heavy boxes of books -- over $1500 worth!

Harry and the Rainbow Club are doing such important work providing 2SLGBTQ+ themed books to schools across Ottawa. Kids across the city will be able to see themselves reflected in the books they read because of their advocacy and fundraising, and we're so proud to support them in this work.

Huge thank you to everyone who donated their points and to our publisher partners for their generous donations: Ampersand, Arsenal Pulp Press, Groundwood Books, Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Canada, Penguin Random House Canada, Publishers Group Canada, and Scholastic Canada.

A bit about the book:

Frida loves spending time with her great-grandmother, Ama, and listening to her inspiring stories of activism. Ama believes in helping people, especially children and families. But Ama has one big problem. She is always cold. Her fingers feel like ice cubes, and sometimes, she feels like she lives inside a refrigerator. Frida has to do something to help, just like Ama taught her. With the help of a kind person named Tanis, and a special kind of wool called qiviut, Frida finds the perfect way to keep Ama warm!

When we opened in 2022, a friendly kid in the neighbourhood, Harry, made us a picture to welcome us to the neighbourhood. That picture meant so much to us that it still hangs in our kids section.

Now, nearly four years later, Harry is still making people feel welcome. Harry and his friends founded the Rainbow Club at Connaught Public School. They’re raising funds to make sure students have access to 2SLGBTQ+ books at their school.

You can help Harry and his friends. This weekend only, if you collect points with us, visit the store and ask to donate your points balance to The Rainbow Club. We’ll be matching your points donations up to $300.
