Is your e-bike actually legal to ride on Ottawa and Gatineau roads, bike lanes, and pathways? A lot of riders assume yes, because a website, a dealer, or an influencer told them so. Here's what Canadian law actually says.

An e-bike is only legal if the motor cannot exceed 500 continuous watts and the assisted speed cannot exceed 32 km/h. That's a capability test, not a settings test: if your e-bike's app, display, or wiring can push it past either number, it's not legally an e-bike, even if you always ride it on the lower setting.

Ride a non-compliant e-bike and you're risking fines, possible criminal charges, a voided personal insurance policy, and being personally sued if you injure someone, since none of the protections that cover a legal e-bike apply to one that doesn't meet the definition.

We may have created a monster. 🚨

Two of our own techs turned a quiet Tuesday into a full cops-and-robbers chase up and down the street outside our Ottawa store, and by the time Will asked "where are my guys?", the shop manager had zero answers.

Here's the thing: nobody could catch them. Full-day sprints, hard launches, sharp turns, zero mechanical complaints after, because these aren't toys, they're the same e-bikes we build for law enforcement, security patrol, and bylaw enforcement fleets across Ottawa. If our bikes can survive two grown men playing cops and robbers on a public street, they can survive your patrol shift.

People ask us all the time why every bike on our floor runs . Short answer: we've seen what breaks, what doesn't, and what our customers actually love riding day after day.
