Hey Ottawa RC community! ๐โก
We recently read a critical update from Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) regarding lithium-ion battery fires, and the numbers are a serious wake-up call. OFS has already responded to 10 fires linked to lithium-ion batteries so far this year, bringing the total to 54 since 2024. In fact, one recent local house fire caused $750,000 in damage from a single battery failure.
While Meta's news rules mean we can't share the news article directly on Facebook, the message is too important not to pass along to our racers and builders.
If you are new to the hobby, one of the main differences between true hobby-grade RC trucks and the cheap toys found online is the quality and safety of the electronicsโespecially the batteries.
According to OFS, the most frequent issues are found in low-quality or modified batteries, as well as with damaged or aging batteries. Here are a few critical takeaways:
โ ๏ธ The Danger of "Cheap" Upgrades: Low-quality or modified batteries continue to pose a major risk. Cheap aftermarket batteries and chargers (like the ones often found on unnamed e-commerce platforms), or devices that are altered for higher speed or longer battery life, can bypass built-in safety controls. This significantly increases the risk of fire.
โ ๏ธ Inspect Your Gear: Using damaged, swollen, or worn batteries drastically increases the risk of fire. If your battery looks puffy, itโs time to safely retire it!
โป๏ธ Safe Disposal: Proper disposal is just as crucial as safe charging. Never toss old batteries in the garbage, as they can easily catch fire in waste facilities. Instead, put tape over the terminals and properly dispose of them. You can use the City of Ottawa's Waste Explorer (ottawa.ca/wasteexplorer) to find a municipal drop-off, or find a Call2Recycle drop-off location (call2recycle.ca) at retailers across the city.
At Hobby Hideaway, we only stock high-quality, trusted LiPo batteries built specifically for the demands of hobby-grade RC.
We want you to go fast, but we want you to be safe doing it. Thatโs why we also sell essential safety products like LiPo Safe bags and proper storage solutions. More importantly, our team is always here to give you expert advice on how to safely use, balance, and charge your batteries, which greatly reduces the risk of an accident.
