Not all hydrangeas are the same! 🌸Here’s a quick guide to three popular types and what makes each one unique:

🌿 Arborescens Hydrangeas – Also known as smooth hydrangeas, these are hardy, reliable bloomers that flower on new wood. They’re known for their large, rounded flower heads and can be pruned back in late fall or early spring while the plant is fully dormant. Prune back to 8-12 inches just above a healthy leaf node. Arborescens Hydrangeas perform best in 4-6 of morning sun with afternoon shade.

🌺 Macrophylla Hydrangeas – Commonly called bigleaf hydrangeeas. Known for their classic mophead or lacecap blooms in beautiful shades of white, pink, blue and purple. Some varities can even change flower color by altering the ph of the soil. With the exception of a few reblooming varieties, macrophylla varieties bloom on old wood. Keep pruning limited to removing dead wood and crowding branches. Like Arborescens hydrangeas these hydrangeas perform best with morning sun and afternoon shade.

☀️ Paniculata Hydrangeas – The most sun-loving of all hydrangeas! They produce cone-shaped blooms on new wood, starting white or green and changing to shades of pink as the season progresses. Prune back the flower heads after they finish blooming to the first leaf node or leave them on for winter appeal!
