💙 ELLIE 💙

Our hearts broke yesterday as we had to say so long to the best dog. While she lived with Karen, she was all of our dog.

Four and a half years ago, Ellie met us at Highjinx. One look into those big brown eyes and we knew.

She was staying.

Ellie came from a terrible life. She didn’t know how to trust, or that she was safe. But she was so brave and began to learn. She healed. She flourished. She learned she was home.

And then she became very, very Ellie in the best way. She was fun, agile and always willing to go try new things. Ellie loved gatherings, napping, homemade food, coffee, adventure walks, kids and rain days cuddling. Holidays were always her time to shine. Every Christmas tree came with a little present from PooDog.

She met Stella and immediately found her best friend. They travelled, went to the cottage and did all sorts of excellent dog stuff together. They were a great team, Stella showed Ellie how to be her true dog self.

Ellie had the best bark, the biggest hound eyes, and could become a 55-pound anchor when she decided she wasn’t moving.

But what made Ellie special wasn’t just her ridiculousness.

She had so many friends at Highjinx and around Centretown. People would sit on the floor beside her bed just to spend a moment with her. She was patient and gentle, and somehow seemed to know when someone needed a quiet moment and a dog who wouldn’t judge.

She gave people that.

At 14½, though, even Ellie couldn’t out-stubborn Lyme disease, kidney failure and old age.

Her body was tired.

So we kept the promise we made when she came to us: to love her, care for her, and let her be her own dog.

When it was time, we let her go peacefully, surrounded by love.

Thank you, Ellie, for trusting us. For choosing us. And for showing so many people what a little love can do.

Eleanor Rigby. Elliephant. Ells. PooDog. Miss Ellie.

You were so, so loved.

And you will be very, very missed. 💙

We’ll miss you. 💙🌿
Highjinx is now officially closed for our annual break.
Retreat. Refresh. Recreate.
This pause gives our amazing volunteers a chance to rest, and our food donors a little holiday from keeping the pantry stocked week after week.
We know some folks have wondered why we take an unpaid break, but the truth is simple: this work takes a lot of energy, and this annual reset is how we make sure we can come back ready to do it all again.
Before anyone worries, we’ve given lots of notice, stocked up those who rely on us, and made sure people know where to access support while we’re away. We also have a small group of steady volunteers on call for urgent situations — and somehow our phones still seem to connect even when we’re “off-grid.” Lucky us.
Thanks to the Neighbours who understand that even the people handing out the sandwiches occasionally need to sit down and eat one.
See you soon. 💙🌿
