One of the lessons we’ve learned through growing The Raw Carrot is that creating meaningful employment also requires creating consistent demand for the products our employees make.

In a recent conversation, one of our partner sites put it simply: “We’d love to add another cook day, but first we need another place to sell the soup.”

That connection between sales and employment is central to the Raw Carrot model. Every retail partner, market and corporate customer creates another opportunity to grow sales. As demand becomes more consistent, partner sites have greater capacity to sustain existing jobs and create new employment opportunities.

That’s why developing local sales channels is an important part of how we support our partner sites.

“Why don’t staff just work more hours?” For people receiving disability support, the answer can be complex.

In Ontario, a person with a disability receiving ODSP can earn up to $1,000 per month in net earnings without reducing their income support. Above that amount, 75 cents of every additional dollar in net earnings is deducted from their ODSP payment.

That means earning another $100 above the exemption may result in a $75 reduction in ODSP, before considering other factors such as transportation costs and the physical or mental demands of working additional hours.

These realities are one reason we need to think carefully about what employment success looks like for people living with disabilities.

For some people, success means meaningful part-time work, additional income, purpose, relationships and a job they can sustain while maintaining their health and stability.

The environment around us can make an enormous difference in our ability to work. For people living with anxiety, trauma, disability or other barriers to employment, the environment around them matters.

A patient supervisor, a predictable routine, flexibility on a difficult day and a team that understands everyone works differently helps create the conditions for people to participate and contribute. This is why supported employment matters.

Since launching The Raw Carrot at OneChurchTO, supported employment has created opportunities that extend into the wider life of the church.

“We have become known as a place that makes space for people with disabilities, and values them.”

The Raw Carrot employees are joining small groups, participating in church activities, building friendships with volunteers and becoming part of the wider community.

“They aren’t just over on their own at The Raw Carrot. They’re part of our church family.”

Meaningful employment creates opportunities to earn an income, build confidence and develop skills. It can also strengthen relationships, connection, purpose and a genuine sense of belonging.
