Origin and Etymology The peacoat originated in the 18th century with the Dutch Navy, where it was known as the pijjekker, derived from pij (coarse wool fabric) and jekker (jacket). Alternative theories suggest the name derives from "P-cloth" (pilot cloth) used by British Royal Navy petty officers, abbreviated to "P-Coat," or from the French pij referring to the fabric itself.
