From June 1st to October 30th, we are open every day from 10 am to 5 pm. Tysons’ Fine Minerals Inc.

We specialize in Canadian minerals, doing much of our own collecting, but we also stock international minerals, jewellery, carvings, works of art & some fossils. All other times, please call the store at (902) 728-8364 to make an appointment. is owned and operated by Rod & Helen Tyson. Incorporated in 1988, Tysons’ has been in business since 1975, first in Edmonton, Alberta, now in Parrsboro, Nova

Scotia (since May, 2007). Helen makes stone bead jewellery and gem trees; Rod does cutting, polishing and silver smithing. We do custom work and Helen will help you design your own necklaces, pendants, earrings or bracelets, using our extensive collection of beads and findings. Or you can buy beads and findings from us for your own projects. Location & About Our Store: Across the road from the Ship's Company Theatre www.shipscompany.com (Take Main Street past "the Ship" to Whitehall Road then follow our signs: right on Philadelphia Avenue then right onto Lamb's Hill Road.) Located in our home, the store is a 1987 addition to a ship’s captain’s home built around 1892. Parking and Accessibility: We have a large, graveled U-shaped driveway with plenty of adjacent parking space. There is room for motor homes and tour buses. We have a wheelchair-accessible ramp and a public washroom.

Galena with andradite garnet and quartz from the El Mochito Mine, near Las Vegas, Honduras

This is a spectacular, brilliant, skeletal, undamaged galena from this locality. Reminds me of the Sa Dena Hess Mine in the Yukon with the andradite and quartz association.

Kobellite in citrine quartz from the Sceptre Claims, Emerald Lake, Yukon.

We worked the Sceptre Claims area twice – 1980, 1981 and again in 1994,5,6 when we held the property. One of the minerals we found in with the quartz crystals was a rare sulphide, kobellite. I was unsure of what the grey needles were and took them to Dr. Smith at the U of Alberta who did the analysis.

This specimen shows a nice phantom of kobellite on an earlier generation of quartz – a super polished piece.

Pyrrhotite from the Bluebell Mine, Riondel, British Columbia.

When I moved back to Alberta in 1974 the Bluebell Mine was already closed (1973) and I never had the opportunity to go underground and see the mineralization myself. The miners I ran into in the two decades after were primarily interested in the quartz crystals – only a few were smart enough to collect the sulphide minerals present in the crystal pockets. Mike Evick, from Calgary, told me he’d seen pyrrhotite crystals to six inches! I wonder where they all went?

This specimen is a lovely stack of pyrrhotite crystals with brilliant luster associated with quartz and siderite.

Chabazite from Glenmont, Nova Scotia

We worked in the quarry with an excavator collecting zeolites twice – really good zeolites for Nova Scotia. The only real issue is that the heulandites, the thomsonites, the stilbites, the analcimes, the mesolites, the chabazites that we found were all white to off-white/tan coloured.

This thumbnail is one of the wonderful WHITE penetrant twin chabazites we found.

Marcasite from Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada.

Just south of Inuvik, on the Dempster Highway is a quarry in limestone where we collected some very fine calcites and then on a later trip we found a seam full of pyrite nodules with the occasional marcasite like this one.

This marcasite was one of the pieces we kept from our collecting there in 1992 – one of the last times we drove to Inuvik on the Dempster. It became much more cost effective to ship our field gear and fly our crew shortly after we made this find. Being in Inuvik without a vehicle meant we never visited the quarry again and I’ve often wondered just what has gone into road fill.
