It’s Sunday and we’re back with A Nice Pair – our weekly book and vinyl series. Today we’re pairing the book Girls Like Us by Sheila Weller with Carole King’s album Tapestry.

Girls Like Us is a combined biography of Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon. Together they represent a huge collective of American girls who came of age in the sixties. These are their stories and the author shares how these women broke tradition and shared their experience at a unique point in time through their music.

Originally released in 1971 and one of the best-selling albums of all time, Tapestry is Carole King’s second studio album. It won four Grammy Awards in 1972, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year. It includes hits such as I Feel the Earth Move and You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.

It's Sunday and we're back with A Nice Pair where we match up related books and vinyl. Today we're pairing the book Lightning Striking: Ten Transformative Moments in Rock and Roll by Lenny Kaye with the album Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden.

Lightning Striking tells a distinctive history of rock through ten pivotal scenes spanning Elvis’s Memphis and the Beatles’ Liverpool to punk, metal, and the explosive Seattle scene of 1991. The book explores how rock evolves when artists, audiences and the cultures surrounding them come together. The Seattle chapter places Soundgarden within the vibrant early-90s scene alongside Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and other influential bands. It also highlights Chris Cornell and Soundgarden’s pivotal role in shaping the sound and impact of Seattle rock.

Badmotorfinger is Soundgarden's third studio album. Released in 1991 on the heels of Pearl Jam's Ten and Nirvana's Nevermind, it's been credited with helping to break alternative rock and grunge into the mainstream. It features hits such as Rusty Cage and Outshined.

It's Sunday so it's time for A Nice Pair - our weekly book and vinyl series. Today we're pairing up The Kingdom of Zydeco book by Michael Tisserand with the album Queen Ida and Her Zydeco Band - On a Saturday Night.

The Kingdom of Zydeco explores this unique genre of music that's a blend of blues and Cajun music infused with African-Carribean rhythms and Creole-French-English lyrics. Tisserand takes the reader back to its roots and not only introduces the artists who perform zydeco but also tells the story of the distinctive American culture that celebrates it.

Accordionist Ida Guillory became Queen Ida when her friend and fellow zydeco artist George Broussard introduced her as "the queen of the Mardi Gras" at a dance covered by reporters. The nickname made the headlines and stuck. On a Saturday Night is her tenth album and was nominated for a Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording Grammy in 1984. It includes the title track and Laissez Le Bon Temps Rouler.

It’s Sunday and we’re back with A Nice Pair – our weekly book and record mash-up. Today we’re pairing the book Children of the Blues: 49 Musicians Shaping a New Blues Tradition by Art Tipaldi with The Very Best of John Lee Ho**er album.

Building on both life and music lessons learned from fathers of the blues, Children of the Blues offers first-person memories from a new generation of artists who applied what they learned to their own craft. The forty-nine current musicians featured preserve traditional blues forms while infusing them with their own fresh voices and lessons. We have a used copy currently in stock which is signed by both the author and one of the featured musicians, Kelly Joe Phelps.

John Lee Ho**er was an American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist who represented Mississippi blues in its purest form. In his own words, “All my songs tell stories people can relate to…and the way I play it, they can feel it.” The Very Best Of album features 18 of some of his biggest hits, showcasing his signature guitar riffs, deep, moody vocals and rhythmic storytelling. It includes Boom Boom and Boogie Chillun and Crawlin’ King Snake.

It's Sunday and we're back with A Nice Pair - our weekly book and record series. Today we're pairing the book Traveling: On the Path of Joni Mitchell by Ann Powers with Joni Mitchell's album Blue.

Instead of a standard biography format, Ann Powers examines Joni Mitchell's life and music via the concept of journeys. She looks into the journeys Mitchell took via the places she lived, the types of music she experimented with, her collaborations and her health battles. As both a biographer and a fan, the author infuses her own musings about the prolific artist and asks as much of herself as of her subject.

Blue is Joni Mitchell's fourth studio album. Originally released in 1971, it was both a critical and commercial success, earning platinum status by the RIAA (US sales in excess of 1,000,000 copies). Rolling Stone ranked it number three on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and is considered a "landmark against which the work of all confessional singer-songwriters [has] been measured." It features hits such as River and A Case of You.

It's Sunday and we're back with A Nice Pair - our weekly series where we match up related records and books. Today we're pairing the book I Am Brian Wilson: A Memoir with the Beach Boys album Pet Sounds.

I Am Brian Wilson takes you behind the scenes of an iconic life. As co-founder of the hugely popular Beach Boys, Wilson created some of the most recognizable songs ever recorded over multiple decades. Unfortunately, as is the story time and again in musician memoirs, for a long period, drugs and mental health issues plagued him, but he managed to come back over and over again, persevering to overcome his demons. Looking back on an outsized life, this memoir takes you to the inside, as Wilson reveals his creative inspiration, his struggles and the extreme highs and lows from which he finally emerged on top.

Pet Sounds was the Beach Boys' eleventh studio album. A departure from their earlier surf sound, its layered arrangements blended pop, jazz, classical and avant-garde elements. Its experimental sound combined rock instrumentation with layered vocal harmonies, found sounds and instruments that typically weren't associated with rock at the time. While it was widely called a concept album, Wilson surmised that "it was really a production concept album." Hits include songs such as Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows.
