To get a little more specific here…

When someone asks for a freebies in exchange for exposure, what they’re really asking for is someone else (small biz owners) to absorb the real cost, packaging, time, product, in exchange for something that will never ever translate into a paying customer. Free isn’t a business model and I wish this trend would stop now.

Sponsorship requests from private groups put small businesses into an impossible position: you say yes and you’re guaranteeing nothing in return and you say no and you’re the bad guy. Sponsorships make sense for big brands, not for one person just trying not to crash out in 2026.

When people say they won’t come downtown, what they’re actually mean is they’ve chosen not to prioritize your product and that’s totally ok but the judgement around where I’ve chosen to have my shop doesn’t move my location lol.

Telling me I need more staff is a punch to the gut. Hiring isn’t just a payroll that I can t afford in this economy, it is also source deductions, vacation pay, insurance, training, and means no pay for me as a solopreneur now. I once had 19 staff and now it’s just me. Payroll isnt free and believe me I’d I could afford the help and didn’t have to do EVERYTHING on my own I would jump at the chance.

Most people don’t know the cost of running a shop in 2026 and maybe this helps 💖
