June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada - spend some time and learn about the communities that were stewards of the land before the settlers arrived.

From our website:

Prince Edward County exists on the historical lands of the Huron-Wendat, Haudenasaunee and Anishinaabe peoples. This land was their home and they kept it well. The signing of the ‘Gunshot Treaty’ (Johnson-Butler Purchase 1787) and The Crawford Purchase 1783 instigated the unlawful removal of several Indigenous groups and allowed United Empire Loyalists and others to settle.

These Indigenous groups spent years nurturing and protecting these lands. We owe to them the recognition and acknowledgement, that, because of their stewardship and protection of the land, we as settlers, receive infinite benefits.

Prince Edward County has welcomed refugees and vacationers alike and has remained the home of settlers. We appreciate and continue to learn from our neighbouring community The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte as well as extending our support to the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund by hosting a legacy space from 2017-2021.

It is the wish of Books & Company to acknowledge the legacy left to us as stewards of this land and to participate in reconciliation as an ongoing process. Part of this ongoing process is to hold government accountable to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.

Please continue to reflect on what reconciliation means to you.

We are thrilled to host writer/musician/photographer Don Pyle and writer/musician Pete Crighton Thursday June 4, 7pm - 8:30pm here at Books & Company

They will be reading and discussing Pyle’s new release Rough Description: Love Letters and Ghost Stories from a Life in Music and Crighton’s Cosmic Thing

This is a FREE EVENT and not to be missed!

Rough Description:
“Based on his days as a fly in the mosh pit of the nascent punk scene in Toronto and decades of drumming for some of my favorite beat groups, you would think that Don Pyle has a lot of great stories to tell and insight to share. You are not wrong. Come for the Guelph Riot, and then see if you can guess which Shadowy Man tossed a lovingly compiled Grateful Dead cassette from a moving vehicle.” — Ira Kaplan, co-founder, vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter from Yo La Tengo

Cosmic Thing:
The B-52s were always q***r, though not overtly, and this book dissects the coded q***r messaging in their music, using 1989’s Cosmic Thing as a focal point.

Alongside the author’s own q***r awakening, Crighton investigates the band’s history and recorded work to date, providing cultural context along the way, and proves what was obvious all along – the B-52s aren’t just pop culture icons, they are q***r history.

Cosmic Thing took the world by storm in 1989 in the wake of the band’s single greatest tragedy: losing guitarist Ricky Wilson to complications from AIDS in 1985. Cosmic Thing is a celebration of q***r joy in the face of that seismic setback. Not only did the B-52s have to fight through their pain and grief to make their fifth full length record, the band was also up against a conservative government under Reagan (then Bush), a misunderstood virus still ravaging the q***r community and an indifferent public after years out of the spotlight. Watching the band enjoy their greatest success in the face of adversity was part of what made Cosmic Thing such a marvel to behold - as miraculous as the B-52s’ entire career.

The Andrew

Join filmmaker & animator David Rendall and author Eric Beck Rubin for a special evening of reading, screening and discussion as they share their latest work.

Both the film Today Is A Gift and the novel Ten Clear Days come from the stories their grandmothers told them, of their survival of the war in Europe.

The discussion will revolve around the artistic interpretation and perpetuation of these stories and the hybrid forms they take.

April is poetry month!

the sheep lady from algiers

By Patti Smith
nodding tho' the lamps lit low
nodding for passers underground
to and fro she's darning and
the yarn is weeping red and pale
marking the train stops from algiers

sleeping tho' the eyes are pale
hums in rhythum w/a bonnet on
lullaby a broken song
the sifting-cloth is bleeding red
weeping yarn from algiers

lullaby tho' baby's gone
the cradle rocks a barren song
she's rocking w/her ribbons on
she's rocking yarn and needles oh
it's long coming from algiers
