Meet Doug Mason – Wildfowl Carver Behind Doug Mason Carvings

Doug has lived in the County his whole life, and his carving journey started young. At about 15, he began making decoys to hunt over. An uncle who was an established carver himself convinced him to enter a carving show in Brighton, and Doug came home with a ribbon. From there, it took off. He has since competed at the Canadian Championships, the North American Championships in Livonia, and the World Championships in Ocean City, Maryland.

Forty years later, Doug's work has evolved from functional decoys into true works of art. A single piece can take him over 300 hours, with every vermiculation line carved as a single stroke. Realism is everything, because that is how the work is judged.

For Doug, it is about honouring the bird. Every feather, every line, every hour spent.

Meet Curtis Shannon – Wine Sales Representative Behind Canadian Vinegar Cellars

Canadian Vinegar Cellars has been crafting barrel-aged vinegars at Black Prince Winery in Picton for 15 years. Every vinegar in the lineup is aged in oak barrels and made from either wine or cider bases, then infused with natural flavours to create something genuinely one of a kind.

The current selection includes a Pinot Noir balsamic, cranberry, and raspberry blackcurrant. These are ideal for salad dressings, bread dipping, and charcuterie, though Curtis is quick to point out there's no wrong way to enjoy them. Through the off-season, the full lineup is also available through their online store.

For Curtis, it comes down to sharing something special with people who appreciate it.

Meet David Carpenter – Novelist and Poet Who Writes as J.D. Carpenter

David first visited the County in 1980, bought land here in 1988, and became a resident in 2002. Since then, he's written six novels and several books of poetry, with his two most recent novels both set right here.

Writing as J.D. Carpenter, David is the author of the Campbell Young murder mystery series along with stand-alone novels and poetry collections. The County Murders centres on the murder of a local vintner, and Lake Pirates is also set in familiar County locales. Readers often tell him how much they love recognizing the places woven into his stories.
Each novel takes four to five years to complete.

For David, writing means building a whole world one sentence and one chapter at a time, like constructing a house brick by brick. He says The Local Store is one of his favourite places to share his work, thanks to the atmosphere and the support he finds here.
