Me in 2009, freshly immigrated: “Back-to-school shopping? What do you mean? Aren’t your pencil case, backpack and lunch bag still in good shape?” I had no idea it was even a thing when we first moved here. Funny how quickly the kids caught on to all these new-to-us things…
Looking at this photo from April 2nd, 2009, the very first day our boys stepped onto the bus for their new school in a new country, so many emotions come rushing back. My very first feeling now? It makes me cry. What on earth was I thinking! My second? Reality was, that it was not at all a sad experience. We were excited, energized and ready for this big adventure.
In August 2009, “Back to school shopping” wasn’t just about notebooks and backpacks for our kids. It was about trying to immerse into a brand-new culture and fit in. They stood out at first, learning a new language, carrying an accent, wearing European clothes, and navigating unfamiliar Canadian traditions and social norms. We went through the motions, and they adapted so fast, faster than we did. Looking at them now, I am so proud of the strong personalities, resilience, and great attitudes they developed through it all.
