This is a little more involved than most. The top section gets nearly finished, then I have to cut a tenon for the center band. The outer diameter of the bushing ring is the size of the band and the inner diameter is sized for a snug fit. The width is the size of the finished band. Too narrow and it doesn't fit right. Too wide or beveled even in the slightest and there's an unsightly gap between the pen top and the band.

I'm going to try a different technique on this one. Rather than trying to precut the pieces exactly to size and glue them before turning, I'm going to rough in the purpleheart ends and use a parting tool to remove material to expose the brass and then glue the black acrylic over the ends and turn to the final dimension. This way, no complicated jigs or measuring. I basically freehand them to fit the hardware.

Time to break out the paints.

With my current focus on carving small figures, I have one knife that works well but I hated the tiny curved handle that came with it. I decided to "borrow" one of my Jack Daniel's pen blanks and convert it into a knife handle that I would actually enjoy using. Here are the results.
