Have you ever had suicidal thoughts?  I ask this question multiple times a week.

Most of you know Dave is a paramedic. Fewer people know what I do for a living. I have worked as a social worker practicing psychotherapy for 18 years. September is su***de awareness month and given recent events in Canada it is more important than ever to talk about su***de.

I want to go over three myths about su***de I frequently hear.

Myth #1: Talking about su***de causes people to attempt su***de.

This is most definitely not true. I have asked hundreds of people if they are having suicidal thoughts and have only lost four people to su***de during my career. Talking about su***de saves lives.

Myth #2: People who attempt su***de are selfish.

Most people who attempt su***de have an underlying mental illness. This might be PTSD, depression, anxiety, and/or substance abuse. These illnesses cloud people's judgement. I have seen the most caring, compassionate and giving individuals battle with suicidal ideation. Sadly, many who are having suicidal thoughts actually think their family and friends would be better off if they were dead as they feel like a burden. Having worked with many family members of people who have completed su***de I can say this is most definitely not the case.

Myth #3: My family member/friend will hate me if I call 911 because they are threatening to attempt su***de.

I am not going to lie and say everything will be okay. They very likely will be angry for a while.  None of my clients are thrilled when I call 911.  Dave most definitely was not happy and we had to do a lot of repair in our relationship after. However, I would rather face that anger and do that repair than live with the regret and grief of losing someone I care about to a death that was preventable.

If you are thinking about su***de, please reach out for help.  9-8-8 is a 24/7 crisis line Canada wide. There are also mental health clinics in Ontario where you can talk to someone for free.  In an emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department.

This September, $5 of every sale of our new candle PTSD IS A CHAPTER, YOUR STORY IS NOT OVER will be donated to Boots on the Ground. Candles retail for $25.00. Four scents are available: Balance (citrus/ginger), Live (cedar/eucalyptus), Strength (mahogany/teakwood) and Warrior (patchouli).

September is su***de prevention awareness month. August saw Canada lose at least 6 first responders to su***de. We say ‘at least” because often these deaths are not made public.

At Phoenix Soap Company we donate 10% of each sale to charities supporting first responders and their families with PTSD. This month, we have created a special candle to raise funds for a wonderful Canadian charity that provides peer support, referral services, debriefing and therapy dogs to first responders, emergency dispatch operators, military and veterans, corrections officers, probation and parole workers, youth services workers and nurses. $5 from each sale of our new candle PTSD IS A CHAPTER, YOUR STORY IS NOT OVER will be donated to Boots on the Ground.

As always, for all other sales we will continue to donate 10% to Canadian charities supporting first responders and their families with PTSD.

Purchases can be made at events or online at www.phoenixsoapcompany.com.  Shipping across Canada is $5 and free for orders over $75.

Boots On The Ground is an anonymous helpline providing confidential and anonymous peer support to First Responders across the province, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is a charitable organization completely run and staffed by volunteers.
