Today, May 05 is recognized as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S), also known as Red Dress Day.
Indigenous women and girls are five times more likely to experience violence than any other population in Canada.
As we remember them, honour them and stand together in solidarity to raise awareness of the violence faced by our Indigenous communities and continue to call for truth, accountability and justice.
Here is some practical everyday action we can all take:
-If you see a vulnerable person in a situation that you think could be dangerous, stop and try and help - if you can safely speak with them, reach out and ask if they need help. If it isn’t safe for you to intervene, call the police.
-If you remember something from the past that could be a tip related to a missing or murdered person, report it. Small details can significantly help investigations and potentially reopen cold cases. There’s no such thing as a tip that’s too small or random.
Manitoba Crime Stoppers -1-800-222-8477
-Share reports of missing people with your social networks
Let’s work together to find ways of building a culture in our local communities that doesn’t turn a blind eye to any vulnerable people but instead offers compassion and care.
