Have you ever had a moment when you wondered why you weren’t more like someone else in your family or community? Or perhaps you’ve noticed that someone close to you is struggling with this. It is easy to fall into the trap of comparing our traits, gifts, or temperaments to those around us and feel like we fall short or don’t quite fit the mold. I don’t know why we sometimes believe that there is a mold to fill, but many people feel this way.
Let’s take a moment and consider the natural world. There are 42 wild species of dahlias, but over 57,000 registered cultivated varieties. There are dozens of wild species of sunflowers and hundreds of varieties. Worldwide, there are hundreds of thousands of flower types, with an incredible variety of colour, design, and distinctive features. During my search, I discovered that the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, documented almost a million and a half plant names on their website. Isn’t that incredible?
God did not create just a single flower or flower species. So it should not be surprising then that God did not create your family, let alone humanity, using a one-size-fits-all mold. If God delights in such incredible variety and distinction in the plant kingdom, surely He took more care as he created you!
You were not made to be a duplicate of anyone else. God delights in your unique qualities, your specific personality, and the distinct reflection of His image that you carry. Today I would like to encourage you to give yourself grace and to embrace the way He made you. By doing so, you will honor the Master Designer who made no mistakes when He created you!
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for your incredible creativity and for the thoughtful detail you poured into all of creation. Help me to stop comparing myself to others and to see myself through Your eyes - as someone intentionally, uniquely, and wonderfully made. Grant me the grace to celebrate the gifts, personality, and place You have given me in my family and community. May I live confidently in the truth that You delight in who You made me to be.
