It's Tuesday once again, which means here at ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐†๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ ๐’๐ก๐จ๐ฉ, it is "๐†๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ ๐“๐ข๐ฉ ๐“๐ฎ๐ž๐ฌ๐๐š๐ฒ"! ๐ŸŒฟ

Once your sprouts have tiny leaves, you can move the jar to a brighter spot (like a windowsill without harsh direct sun) for a few hours to help them develop chlorophyll and turn green.

Hey Red Deer growers! ๐Ÿ‘‹ Itโ€™s time for another ๐†๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ ๐“๐ข๐ฉ ๐“๐ฎ๐ž๐ฌ๐๐š๐ฒ here at The Grow Shop.

This week, weโ€™re talking about ๐“๐ž๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž ๐ƒ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฌโ€”specifically, why the difference between your daytime "lights on" temp and nighttime "lights off" temp is an absolute game-changer for plant development. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ๐Ÿชด

In the indoor gardening world, the relationship between day and night temperatures is known as the ๐ƒ๐ˆ๐…. While itโ€™s tempting to keep your grow space at a constant, warm temperature 24/7, here is why letting your room cool down at night matters:
โ€ข ๐Œ๐ข๐ฆ๐ข๐œ๐ฌ ๐Œ๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž: A natural nighttime cooldown signals to your plants that itโ€™s time to shift their energy toward robust flowering and fruiting rather than just vegetative growth.
Keeping your night temperatures slightly cooler than your days helps keep your internodal spacing tight. If your nights are exactly as warm as your days, your plants are far more likely to stretch and get spindly!
A healthy temperature drop helps bring out deep, vibrant colors in your leaves and blooms, and actively encourages the production of essential oils and resins.

Aim for a temperature drop of about ๐Ÿ“ยฐ๐‚ ๐ญ๐จ ๐Ÿ–ยฐ๐‚ (๐Ÿ๐ŸŽยฐ๐… ๐ญ๐จ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“ยฐ๐…) when your lights go out. Just be careful not to let the room get too coldโ€”dropping below 15ยฐC (60ยฐF) can shock your roots and stunt growth.

Happy ! ๐ŸŒฑ

Have you noticed tiny, annoying black flies buzzing around the base of your plants? You might be dealing with Fungus Gnats! These little pests thrive in damp soil and feed on dead organic matter in your root zone.

Keep an eye out for small, mosquito-like flies hovering near the soil surface or resting on lower leaves. Give your pots a gentle tapโ€”if a small cloud of flyers stirs up, youโ€™ve definitely got a gnat problem.

Fungus gnat larvae absolutely need moisture to survive. Simply letting the top inch or two of your topsoil dry out completely between waterings is one of the easiest ways to disrupt their lifecycle.
Place these right at the soil level to catch the adult flyers before they have a chance to lay another batch of eggs.

If you've got a stubborn infestation, it's time to treat the soil directly. We recommend a proven one-two punch:
โ€ข ๐Œ๐จ๐ฌ๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ญ๐จ ๐ƒ๐ฎ๐ง๐ค๐ฌ: Crumble a bit of a dunk into your watering can. They contain BTI, a naturally occurring bacteria that specifically targets and eliminates gnat larvae without harming your plants.
โ€ข ๐„๐ง๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฆ๐ž๐ฌ ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž๐ญ๐ž: Add this into your feeding routine to break down dead root material and organic matter in the soil. By keeping the root zone incredibly clean, you are literally starving the larvae by removing their primary food source!

Don't let these little flyers ruin your current run. Stop by the shop at 5215 54th Ave, Unit A, and weโ€™ll get you set up with the traps, dunks, and enzymes you need to wipe them out for good.

Happy growing! ๐Ÿชด

Moving your plants from the cozy indoors to the great outdoors is a big transition! To avoid "transplant shock" or sun-scorched leaves, you need to gradually introduce them to the elements. This process is called

Here is a simple schedule to get your starts ready for the Red Deer garden season:
โ€ข ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ๐ฌ ๐Ÿโ€“๐Ÿ: Place your plants outside in a sheltered, fully shaded spot for just ๐Ÿโ€“๐Ÿ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ during the warmest part of the day, then bring them back inside.
โ€ข ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ๐ฌ ๐Ÿ‘โ€“๐Ÿ’: Increase their time to ๐Ÿ‘โ€“๐Ÿ’ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ and introduce them to dappled sunlight or very light morning sun.
โ€ข ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ๐ฌ ๐Ÿ“โ€“๐Ÿ”: Gradually move them into more direct sunlight and leave them out for ๐Ÿ”โ€“๐Ÿ– ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ. Start letting them experience a bit of the breeze to help strengthen their stems.
โ€ข ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ•+: If the overnight lows are looking safe, you can leave them out all night! After a full 24 hours outdoors, they are officially ready to be transplanted into their permanent homes.

Our Alberta breezes can be tough on tender stems. Keep them protected from heavy gusts during the first few days.
Plants dry out much faster outdoors. Keep a close eye on their water needs during this week!
โ€ข ๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐ข๐ฌ ๐Š๐ž๐ฒ: Itโ€™s tempting to rush, but a slow transition ensures your plants hit the ground running once theyโ€™re in the garden.

Stop by ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐†๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ ๐’๐ก๐จ๐ฉ if you need any last-minute supplies or advice before you start digging!

Hey everyone, itโ€™s that time of the week againโ€”welcome to another ๐†๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ ๐“๐ข๐ฉ ๐“๐ฎ๐ž๐ฌ๐๐š๐ฒ! ๐ŸŒฑ

This week, weโ€™re focusing on ๐‘๐ž๐š๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐‹๐ž๐š๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ. Your plants are excellent communicators; you just have to know what to look for!

Here is a quick guide to help you figure out if your plant is hungry, thirsty, or dealing with nutrient burn just by observing the color, spots, or curl of the foliage:
โ€ข ๐ŸŸก ๐‡๐ฎ๐ง๐ ๐ซ๐ฒ (๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ƒ๐ž๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ฒ): Are the older, lower leaves turning pale or yellow while the new growth stays green? Your plant is likely hungry and pulling nutrients from its older leaves to support new growth. This is a classic sign of nitrogen deficiency.
โ€ข ๐Ÿฅ€ ๐“๐ก๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฒ (๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ˆ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ž๐ฌ): If the leaves look droopy, feel thin, and seem slightly papery, itโ€™s time for a drink. However, if the leaves are drooping but feel firm, heavy, and are curling downward, you might actually be overwatering!
Are the very tips of your leaves turning crispy, brown, and clawing or curling up? This is a textbook sign that your nutrient mix is a bit too "hot." You'll want to dial back the feed or give them a flush with plain, pH-balanced water.

Next time you're in the garden, take a close look at the canopy. If you're ever unsure about what your plants are trying to tell you, snap a picture and stop by the shop. We're always here to help you troubleshoot and get things back on track.

Happy growing!

Think your soil is just dirt? Think again! If you want massive roots and healthier plants, you need to invite some tiny helpers to the party.

Today weโ€™re talking about ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐œ๐จ๐ซ๐ซ๐ก๐ข๐ณ๐š๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐›๐ž๐ง๐ž๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐›๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐š. Here is why these "good bugs" are your secret weapon:
โ€ข ๐’๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ ๐ž๐ ๐‘๐จ๐จ๐ญ๐ฌ: Mycorrhizae (a type of beneficial fungi) act like an extension of your plant's root system, reaching deep into the soil to grab water and nutrients your roots can't reach on their own.
Beneficial bacteria help break down organic matter, turning locked-up nutrients into a "ready-to-eat" buffet for your plants.
โ€ข ๐ƒ๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ž ๐ƒ๐ž๐Ÿ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ž: By colonizing the root zone, these microbes crowd out harmful pathogens, acting like a natural shield for your garden.

A happy, diverse microbial colony in your soil means bigger, stronger, more resilient plants above ground.

Stop by The Grow Shop this week if you want to pick up some microbial inoculants to get those roots growing wild!

Ready to turn one plant into many? This week, weโ€™re diving into the world of ๐œ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐œ๐ฅ๐จ๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ . Whether you are looking to multiply your favorite houseplants, propagate garden perennials, or ensure your best herbs keep producing, the fundamentals remain the same!

Mastering the clone is all about timing, cleanliness, and the right environment. Here are three pro-tips to ensure your new cuttings take root:

Always use a sterilized, sharp blade. A dull pair of scissors can crush the stem tissue, making it harder for the plant to transport water and more susceptible to rot. Aim for a 45-degree angle to increase the surface area for new roots to emerge.

Since a cutting has no roots yet, it canโ€™t easily replace the water it loses through its leaves. Using a humidity dome or a simple clear bag creates a "mini-greenhouse" that keeps the air moist and prevents your clones from wilting before they can establish themselves.

While some plants root fine in plain water, using a rooting hormone (gel or powder) can significantly speed up the process and increase your success rate. It protects the cut end and signals the plant to stop growing leaves and start growing roots!

For seedlings and fresh cuttings, many professional growers recommend running your lights for ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ during the initial establishment phase to give them maximum energy to build that root system.
