My Story
If you follow my personal account on Instagram, you may have seen my username as thirtyfirstwave; the wave part comes from a combination of my love of first wave music (I was an 80s kid), but also the gigantic metaphorical wave that crashed over me the year I turned thirty-one. Within a month of my 31st birthday I was diagnosed with an advanced stage of cervical cancer, which was treated aggressively. It was a difficult time; I had to make immediate decisions about my future, my health, I lost my ability to have biological children, and I struggled with the side effects of treatment, but in other ways, the care I received during treatment and the love and support I was shown from family, friends, and my community was so positive. It taught me about humility, about compassion, and about what is most important, and because of it, I have celebrated many birthdays since.
I knew I had to pay the kindness I was shown forward, so I started making ‘Cancer Information Folders’. You see, when you are in the oncology examination room, there is a revolving door of specialists placing pamphlets, requisitions, and forms on your lap, and you feel so lost you don’t really hear anything or know what to do with it all, so me, being the organized person that I am, went home and made a folder to store all of the paperwork. Now I make folders for other cancer survivors, free of charge, out of my own pocket, and I have since handed out as many as 50 (if you or a family member need one, please contact me!) Since then, I have received a lot of positive feedback about these folders and the impact they have had on patients and their families. This was the trigger for me realizing this skill within myself and how it can be applied to helping others in a potential career.
Fast forward 4 years later, I was travelling with our foster child to family visits and spending a lot of free time at a library (an organizers dream spot). With some research, I found Professional Organizers in Canada and over the last two years I have become a member, have taken the required courses to become a Professional Organizer, qualified to write the exam this June, and have started my own Professional Organizing business. (Just think of all the paperwork I managed through cancer, teaching, fostering, adopting, and becoming an entrepreneur!)
