It can happen so fast. Fire is a dangerous thing
A Community Reminder: Preventing Grass Fires
A small act of carelessness can have significant consequences, particularly during dry conditions.
On Saturday, a grass fire on St. Joseph Island was fortunately brought under control with the assistance of a local farmer. The Fire Department attended and thoroughly wet down the affected area. Nearby, baled hay presented an additional and potentially serious fire hazard.
This incident is a timely reminder that cigarette butts should never be discarded from a vehicle or onto the ground. What may seem insignificant can easily ignite dry grass, spread quickly, and place farms, property, and our community at risk.
Keeping St. Joseph Island safe is a shared responsibility. Please take the extra moment to dispose of cigarette butts properly and responsibly.
Let’s protect the Island we all value keeping St. Joseph Island safe, clean, and cared for.
