The Gold Rush Bookstore

The Gold Rush Bookstore Inspired by the Rossland Gold Rush of 1890, this establishment is a Golden Nugget of a bookstore

Located in the West Kootenay mountainous region of British Columbia, Canada lies a skiing mecca--Red Mountain. Rich in history, at the turn of the century the historical town of Rossland was booming with prospectors in search of Gold. The Gold Rush of 1890's transformed the town into a bustling city. When the gold dried up, so did the town, just leaving the remnants of many buildings in its wake.

Those buildings that survived are fortunate to house the eclectic mix of businesses, and the Gold Rush bookstore is one of them. Independent bookstores; the heart of a community where tourists and locals alike share a passion for books, information and knowledge. The Gold Rush Bookstore is a place to meet, to promote local authors, while showing economic support in our small mountain town community of Rossland. By offering an array of new books from a cross section of best-selling genres, local authors, and books unique to the Kootenays, we will maintain a strong local community presence. For the bargain shoppers, a gently used book collection is available for a discounted price. The Gold Rush Bookstore, a step back in time where time slows down, where you can sip a hot beverage--DAVIDsTEA, coffee or a hot chocolate--not feel rushed, and all the while show your support for our local economy and the many entrepreneurs that call the Mountain Kingdom…home.

One of The Gold Rush Bookstore’s too selling books! What a backstory about the author’s own tale of resilience and perseverance.

"He was sent to a mental hospital three times and later became one of the world's top-selling authors. His most popular book has sold over 150 million copies and has been translated into more than 80 languages.
They tied him to a table and turned on the electricity. He was just a teenager whose only crime was wanting to be a writer instead of a lawyer. His panicked parents thought his creative mind was a sign of insanity and committed him to a psychiatric institution three times.
Yet, decades later, that same man sat down and wrote a book that would change the world in just fourteen days.
His name is Paulo Coelho, and his story proves that our harshest critics are often completely wrong about our future.
In 1988, Paulo poured his soul into a simple fable about a shepherd boy chasing a dream in the desert. He called it ""The Alchemist."" He knew it was special, but the publishing world didn't care.
The first publishing house to print the book watched it sit on the shelves gathering dust. Sales were so poor that they officially dropped it and gave him back the rights.
They told him the book was a complete failure. Anyone else would have given up right then. After all, the experts had spoken out. But Paulo had survived actual electroconvulsive therapy; he wasn't going to let a rejection letter stop him.
He firmly believed in the central message of his book, which states that when you want something, the universe conspires to help you.
He refused to give up. Paulo found a second publisher willing to give him a chance, and then something wonderful happened. It wasn't a resounding success due to a massive and expensive marketing campaign. The book grew slowly, almost whispering.
One person read it, felt a change in their heart, and passed it on to a friend. That friend passed it on to another.
Soon, that whisper turned into a roar.
The book traveled from the streets of Brazil to the entire world. Today, The Alchemist is one of the most successful books in human history. It has sold over 150 million copies and has been translated into more than 80 languages.
It sits on the desks of the most powerful world leaders and in the backpacks of penniless students.
If Paulo had listened to his parents, he would have spent his life as an unhappy lawyer. If he had listened to his first publisher, his masterpiece would have been lost forever. Instead, he chose to trust his inner voice.
He showed the world that the only true failure in life is refusing to begin the journey, or giving up the moment someone says no.
Your current difficulties are not a punishment. They are simply preparation for the wonderful things that await you along the way.
Keep moving forward, because the world is waiting for your story."

Fun Fact: On April 9, 1833, at Peterborough’s Town Meeting, a proposal was put forward to create a library to be owned and funded by the people through taxation. It would be open to all and become the first free tax-supported public library in the nation. A committee was formed to oversee the library, consisting of one person from each school district. The town appointed three directors: Dr. Abiel Abbot, Timothy Fox, and John H. Steele. In 1837, a complete library catalog was printed, listing all the books in the public library, sorted by topic. One catalog was printed for each family in town. The books were stored first in the general store, then in the post office, and finally in the Miller Pharmacy located in the ground level of the former Town Hall. By 1890, the library had over 6,000 books and space had become an urgent issue. https://peterboroughtownlibrary.org/history-and-renovation-9330/location/peterborough

The award-winning, bestselling author of Hamnet and The Marriage Portrait returns with a soaring historical novel set in Ireland in the years before and after the Great Hunger.

On a windswept peninsula stretching out into the Atlantic, Tomás and his reluctant son, Liam, are working for the great Ordnance Survey project to map the whole of Ireland. The year is 1865, and in a country not long since ravaged and emptied by the Great Hunger, the task is not an easy one. Tomás, however, is determined that his maps will be a record of the disaster.

The British soldiers in charge are due to arrive any day, expecting the work to be completed, but Tomás is unexpectedly sent off course by an unsettling encounter in a copse. His life, and those of his family, will never be the same again. Liam is terrified by the sudden change in his taciturn father. What was it that caused such cracks to open in Tomás and how is Liam, aged only ten, going to finish the mapping, and get them both home?

Land is a novel about separation and reunion, tragedy and recovery, colonisation and rebellion. It is a story of buried treasure, overlapping lives, ancient woodland, persistent ghosts, a particularly loyal dog, and how, when it comes to both land and history, nothing ever goes away.

As spellbinding and various as the landscape that inspired it, Land is, above all, a story of survival, for our times, and for all time.
