Update on the previous post about the donations left when we’re closed. It turns out that it was mostly garbage that someone was cleaning out of a large space, storage, barn or garage. There were some commercial and fixtures and supplies, broken glass in the parking lot, rusty and old furniture that had been left out in the elements that was full of bugs and mice.

These are not donations that we can sell.

It turns out that our garbage provider had emptied both bins this morning, but someone had filled our larger bin with garbage. Old roofing tiles, construction debris, etc.

And as I was parked trying to get staff to come in to help clean the lot, a man drove up in a u-haul and asked me to move my car so that he could back up to the other garbage bin.
Second Chances Thrift Store and the Sackville Food Bank have to pay to have those bins emptied. People who drop off their garbage in our bins for us to dispose of are actually costing us money . You are taking from a charity that helps feed people in need.
Our municipality offers options for garbage removal. Regular pickups, Eco-depot, even a wonderful recycling business in our industrial park. I can highly recommend our provider, Fero, who do an excellent service. And a one-time bin is not as costly as you would think.
But for an organization that is trying to raise funds to feed people, every dollar counts. And deliberately dumping your garbage when we are closed is a cowardly, low-life act.

We really do appreciate your donations. And most people are sending us their gently used items. They know that we will keep what we can. But this was not a drop off of usable items.
I apologize for the rant. But the food bank and thrift store are very dear to my heart. I am proud of the work we do. Proud of our staff and volunteers and proud of the community who support us and our mission. It’s unfortunate that there are people out there that just don’t care and who feel it’s okay to take advantage of people who are helping some of our most vulnerable.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please do continue to donate your gently used items during our business hours. With your help, we will continue to do our work in our community.
Thank you,
Kelli Taylor

At Second Chances , we really appreciate your donations. But dropping stuff off when we are closed can have an opposite impact than what people intend. Here are three pictures of stuff that has been dropped off today, on a Tuesday, while we were closed. Three things: with rain in the forecast, most of these items would be destined for the garbage as they will be damaged by weather. If we leave them out, we risk people going through the items and leaving a bigger mess than what’s there. Two, because items were left next to one of the garbage bins, our provider could not empty both bins. This means we have to pay to have them come a second time, once we clean up the mess. Three, in order to clean up the mess before the weather comes, we now have to pay our employees to come in on their day off, incurring an additional cost there.
We know that people want to support the thrift store and food bank, but please drop off your donations during our donation hours. And bonus: if you drop off when we’re there, we have helpers to help unload. Or you can arrange to have it picked up by our team, because we do that too!
We accept donations:
Mondays 10-3
Wednesday 10-3
Thursday 10-7pm
Friday 10-3
Saturday 10-3

Thanks!
