Put the camera down and take your bear spray out.

Seeing a bear in the wild is a rare and powerful experience—one that’s best taken in, not just captured. 🐻🌲

Instead of reaching for your camera right away, take a moment to observe from a safe distance. By keeping your distance and staying present, you’re also helping keep bears wild and safe.

These moments stay with you far longer than a photo ever could. 💚

A quick refresh on how to use bear spray.

🐻 Are you carrying bear spray? Make sure you know how to use it.

Bear spray is an important safety tool in Banff National Park, but it only works if it's readily accessible and you know how to use it before an encounter occurs.

Here's a quick refresher:
✅ Carry bear spray in a holster or somewhere easy to reach, not in your backpack
✅ Know how to remove the safety clip
✅ If a bear approaches, remain calm, prepare your bear spray and check the wind direction
✅ If the bear comes within range, aim slightly downward toward its face and spray in short bursts to create a cloud between you and the bear
✅ Leave the area once it is safe to do so

Remember: bear spray is for emergency situations only. The best way to avoid a close encounter is to give wildlife plenty of space, travel in groups, make noise, stay alert on the trail and always keep your dogs on a leash.

💡 Before your next hike, take a few minutes to review how your bear spray works. Being prepared can make all the difference. Learn more about hiking safely in bear country: https://ow.ly/Oik050ZmYee

Have you checked the expiry date on your bear spray?

Have you checked the expiry date on your bear spray?

There is no better time than the present to check the expiry date on your bear spray! 🐻

The expiry date is often printed on a sticker, or on the bottom of your canister.

🐻 Bear spray expires because the cannister loses pressure over time and becomes less effective.

🐻 If your bear spray is expired, replace it with a new one to carry with you on your upcoming outdoor adventures.

🐻 You can recycle expired or used bear spray cannisters at a hazardous waste drop off site in your area – such as a designated fire station or the hazardous waste drop off at a landfill.

A reminder to carry bear spray. Kodiak Wildlife has a variety of bear safety products including holsters, noise makers and flares.

The likelihood of a bear encounter increases during buffaloberry season which runs from mid-July to September. Here are some tips to minimize the chance of an encounter:
✅ Travel in groups during daylight hours
✅ Make plenty of noise – talk, sing and use your voice!
✅ Watch for signs of bears (s**t or claw marks)
✅ Keep dogs on a leash
✅ Carry bear spray and know how to use it
✅ Obey closures and be aware of your surroundings

If you encounter a bear, the most important things to remember are:
⚠️ Do not run
⚠️ Stay close to others
⚠️ Watch the bear and respond to its behaviour
⚠️ Never offer the bear food

The Tru Flare 05 Kit is a complete animal deterrent and signaling kit contained in a secure zippered pouch with specific compartments for the contents. A nylon loop on the back of the kit allows for attachment to a belt or backpack to allow for fast access for when you need it most.

Outfitting the Pen Launcher with a Bear Banger (6 included) provides effective animal scaring while keeping you safe from a distance. The flare cartridges (6 red flares) are visible for up to 3 km during the day and an impressive 12km at night.

Summer is bulking season for bears🌿🍓🐜

July to September is when bears build the fat reserves they need for winter. With thousands of visitors each day, repeated disturbances can push bears away from key feeding areas.

Their survival depends on uninterrupted feeding time. Give bears the space they need to thrive. 💚🐻
