British mint history!

British mint history!

When the Mint moved from the Tower of London to its purpose-built home at Tower Hill in 1810, its workers left behind a world of winding lanes and dilapidated buildings within the fortress walls.

The Tower Hill site’s classically inspired buildings were carefully planned, with factory spaces arranged to allow work to flow efficiently from one process to the next. To Mint officers accustomed to the cramped conditions of the Tower, the new site seemed both "stupendous and beautiful", and it was here that the designation 'Royal Mint' came increasingly into use.

These decorative crowns once stood atop lamp posts around the Tower Hill site. Preserved during the final years before the Mint's move to South Wales, they bear a striking similarity to the crowns on top of lamp posts in the grounds of Windsor Castle and point to an abiding connection between the Mint and the monarchy.
