September 30, Canada's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, is coming soon.
For well over a century, Indigenous children were removed from their families and communities and sent to residential schools. Between 1867 and 1996, 140 federally run residential schools operated in Canada, and more than 150,000 First Nations, Inuit and Métis children attended residential schools.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day to honour Survivors, their families and communities, and to remember the children who never returned home.
It is also an opportunity to learn about this part of Canada's history, its lasting effects, and why reconciliation matters.
September 30 is also Orange Shirt Day, with its simple and powerful message: Every Child Matters.
