Bring your boxes of documents for shredding to the Crimestoppers Shred a thon on this Saturday September 19th from 9am- 2pm in the Mall parking lot off 10th by Save On Foods.

The North Okanagan Crime Stoppers is hosting a community Shred-a-Thon on Saturday September 19th from 9am to 2pm in the Mall parking lot off 10th Ave. by Save-On-Foods. There will be on site shredding by Interior Mobile Shredding for a donation of $8 per box.

A meaningful story from one of our Vernon clients. ❤️

Olga is 102 years old and lives at Creekside Long Term Care in Vernon. With macular degeneration and very limited vision, she had relied on lip reading for years to manage her hearing loss. As her eyesight declined, she could no longer do so, making it increasingly difficult for her to communicate with staff and other residents.

Her family reached out to Nexus BC Community Resource Centre in Vernon, where Stephanie helped advocate for hearing assistance and guided them through the process. Nexus then worked with our team at Pardon Me Hearing to provide Olga with the support she needed.

Her family shared:

“Our mother lives at Creekside Long Term Care in Vernon. She has macular degeneration and very limited vision. For years, she managed her hearing loss by reading lips, but as her eyesight declined, that was no longer possible. Without being able to see or hear well, she could no longer communicate easily with staff or other residents.

At meals, she would often sit quietly, smiling, unable to participate because she simply could not hear. She became increasingly isolated.

Our family visited as often as possible. She trusted us and felt safe when we were there, but we knew she needed more than we alone could provide.

That’s when we reached out to Nexus BC Community Resource Centre in Vernon, which helps seniors and residents connect with services, supports and programs in the community.

Stephanie at Nexus listened to our situation and was incredibly patient and understanding of our mother’s needs. She took our request to the board and advocated for hearing assistance for Olga. Stephanie also explained what was needed to qualify for assistance and guided us through the process.

Nexus then worked with Pardon Me Hearing, where Noland, the hearing practitioner, and his staff Brigitte took wonderful care of our mother. They were kind, patient and respectful throughout the entire process.

She began interacting with staff and other residents. Yes, there are still occasional challenges, but she laughs more with the residents at her table at meal time.

To the board and Stephanie at Nexus, and to Noland and Brigitte at Pardon Me Hearing, thank you.

You didn’t just provide hearing aids. You restored our 102-year-old mother’s connection to the people around her. You brought back her laughter, her sense of belonging and the simple pleasure of participating in everyday life.

For that, our family will always be deeply grateful.
