The Artcraft Gallery is your destination to find Salt Spring Island’s famous rose petal beads, with the Forever Rose collection by featured artisan Janet Cliffe.

Janet has been crafting rose petal beads from her Salt Spring garden by the sea for over 25 years! Her rose beads are made from pure and natural rose petals, which she collects and blends with distilled water and then slow cooks for a week. The resulting paste is rolled into beads, which are then strung onto elastic cord or wire to create beautiful prayer malas, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. The beads keep their delicious rose scent for long-lasting enjoyment.

Janet also blends a unique skin elixir and perfume oils using ingredients such as pure rose, rosehip and jojoba oils, and packages multicoloured dried rose petals for eyecatching and diving smelling pot pourri.

You can find Janet’s Forever Rose products at Artcraft this summer and again when we reopen for the winter season in November.

Meet Fernando Garcia Vicario, a Salt Spring Island photographer whose art celebrates the extraordinary beauty of the natural world.

Working at Salt Spring Seeds, Fernando spends his days surrounded by hundreds of heirloom and heritage plants, growing everything from flowers and vegetables to medicinal plants. This close relationship with the plants is at the heart of his photography. He doesn’t simply photograph them; he grows them from seed, watches them develop, and captures their beauty at every stage.

His current focus is fine-art macro photography using a technique called Focus Stacking. Each image is created from dozens of photographs, carefully blended into one incredibly detailed and intimate portrait of a plant.

Fernando’s work has advanced to the final round of jury voting and has received the title of “Official Selection” in the International Photography Awards 2026.

Fernando’s goal is to use his camera as a “tool for beauty and good,” creating images that connect us more deeply with nature. The result is photography that invites you to slow down, look closer, and discover the beauty in details we might otherwise overlook.

Artcraft is excited to present our final Showcase Exhibition of the 2026 season: Seascape from Reality featuring Margo and Dan Zak.

Margo and Dan have spent the past 50 years together experiencing the world through art, architecture and most importantly the natural world. Seascape from Reality reveals how the countless hours immersed in close observation of the coastal landscape have deepened the evolution of their respective ceramics and painting practices through increasingly experimental approaches to traditional themes and mediums.

The exhibition brings together Dan's expansive seascapes and Margo's biomorphic vessels within a single installation to amplify a deeply personal and shared experience of the ocean landscape through divergent yet fundamentally connected sensibilities. This body of work is the result of time spent on the coasts of Salt Spring and Vancouver Islands, and Tofino in particular. The water's edge has become a vital part of both artists' lives, as a place to recalibrate in the face of life's challenges, and as a source of calm, healing and regeneration.

Seascape from Reality is a departure for both Margo and Dan from their regular practices. For Dan it presents his first attempt at a scaled-up approach to landscape, resulting in a more visceral and expansive pictorial space that the viewer can occupy with their entire body, much in the same spirit as how the paintings took form.

For Margo, it marks a break from her meticulous tendencies and highly finished work. Adopting a new and varied sculptural language, here she throws caution to the wind, leaving her fingers and imagination free to reinvent both herself and her art.

Join us for the opening reception on Friday, Aug. 28, from 6–8 pm, and experience an immersive installation that has creatively stretched both artists, separately and together.

The exhibition runs Aug. 28 through Sept. 20, 2026, with an Artist Talk on Sunday, Aug. 30, from 2–3 pm.

Artist spotlight: Sibéal Foyle.

Visitors to the Artcraft gallery can find exceptional visual art among our offerings, such as original drawings and high quality reproductions by Sibéal Foyle. She is an Irish Canadian artist and educator whose work celebrates the beauty and fragility of our local flora and fauna.

Sibéal moved to Salt Spring Island in 2017, where her new surroundings inspired a deeper study of plants and wildlife around her. Through watercolour, contë, pastels, and paint, she creates detailed studies of local lichens, birds, and bees, eventually expanding into larger drawings. Through her art, she hopes to inspire us to notice, appreciate, and protect the flora and fauna that surrounds us.

From this passion grew Páipéar, a sustainable stationery company named for the Irish word for “paper.” Sibéal transforms her original drawings and watercolors into accessible note cards and art prints, allowing these reminders of our natural world to travel beyond the gallery and into everyday life.

This season, we’re featuring a collection of unique and whimsical art inspired by island life, found treasures, and a love of making.

Working with recycled wood, beach stones, driftwood, sea glass, shells, feathers, and other treasures, Cathie Grindler creates colourful folk art, paintings, portraits, and playful animal creations. Her Salt Spring-famous Love Rocks bring inspirational messages to hand-painted stones, while her growing collection of mini original paintings add another love of painting to the mix.

From sardine-can Mother Mary altars to bird portraits painted on glass bottles and wonderfully imaginative creations, each piece is original and made with love.

This season, we're featuring a Salt Spring Island photographer whose work celebrates the wonder of seeing, and preserving the beauty of the world around us. Her name is Amy Melious.

For Amy, photography is a way to gather moments in time and transform them into something tangible to hold and share. Inspired by the remarkable ability of the camera to capture what might otherwise pass unnoticed, each image invites viewers to pause, observe, and connect with the world through a new lens.

Alongside photographic art prints, she creates encaustic photographic works, combining photography with layers of wax to add depth, texture, and a distinctive sense of presence. From arched photographic art prints to encaustic pieces, each work reflects a deep appreciation for the extraordinary found in everyday moments.

After discovering a passion for ceramics during a weekend workshop in 2020, this Salt Spring Island artist, Katherine Scott, quickly immersed herself in creating both functional pottery and sculptural works inspired by the natural world.

Surrounded by the forests near her island cabin, she draws endless inspiration from the textures, forms, and quiet beauty of nature. Working with clay by hand, she creates everything from charcuterie boards, serving pieces, and bowls of all sizes to intricate floral sculptures, allowing each piece to evolve naturally through the creative process.

In recent years, her floral works have grown into richly detailed sculptures that evoke fantastical landscapes and imaginary worlds, while her functional ceramics bring the same sense of artistry and connection to everyday life. Whether displayed as sculptural art or used around the table, each piece reflects a deep appreciation for nature and craftsmanship.

Our 3rd Artcraft Showcase Exhibition opens July 31 on the Mahon Hall Stage, bringing together the work of Salt Spring artists Cheryl Long and Laura Keil.

Working in oil painting and ceramics, these two artists approach the natural world through presence, transformation, and deep material attention. Cheryl Long’s paintings move between landscape and dreamscape, reaching beyond the visible world to explore the energetic, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of nature. Laura Keil’s hand-built ceramic forms emerge slowly through coils, slabs, touch, wood firing, and glaze, carrying the marks of process, time, and elemental change.

Together, their work invites us to consider the living presence of the world around us — the mystery held in landscape, clay, fire, form, and spirit.

Meet Jose Campbell, a largely self-taught artist whose work in oils reflects years of dedication, personal exploration, and independent study.

Grounded in the belief that drawing is the foundation of every artist's practice, Jose regularly attends Painters Guild life drawing and portrait sessions to continually refine her skills and stay connected to the fundamentals of her craft.

Inspired by animals, portraits, and landscapes, her paintings explore character, atmosphere, and emotion with warmth and sincerity. Creating primarily for the joy of the process, Jose's work is a reflection of curiosity, lifelong learning, and a deep appreciation for the natural world and the people and creatures within it.
