To my fathers… ♥️

You are my guiding stars.

Both of the father figures in my life worked extremely hard and taught me so many lessons throughout my life. No matter how stormy life would get, they always provided a sense of stability, safety, and strength.

My biological father, Fred, is the kindest soul and offers so much wisdom in quiet ways. His work ethic is beyond belief and I am so grateful for his presence in my life. Although he prefers to be in the background, anyone who knows him knows how wonderful of a human he is 🥰

My adoptive dad, Erwin, is no longer with us but his love and influence have never faded. I became a part of their family when I was 3 months old and lived in their home full-time until I was 5 or 6, but stayed between my two families growing up.

The hard thing about celebrating someone who has returned home to the other side is running out of photos and not having the opportunity to take more! That’s okay though - I was still able to find some of my favourites.

Many, many bottles of whisky later… the Black Fox Farm & Distillery Whisky Bar has hit the shelf for the season!

This bar is made with nibs that have steeped in whisky for at least one month (when time permits, I’ve steeped them for up to five months.) Then, these nibs are dried and stoneground for 72 hours creating a silky smooth chocolate that melts in your mouth. This 71% dark chocolate tastes much sweeter than one would expect - with caramel notes from the barrel coming through as it melts on your mouth. Happy Monday! While the shop was closed today for the long weekend, I spent the day with my dad.

We went to the cemetery, as we do once every year, to honour our ancestors with our family. This is a traditional Chinese ceremony where offerings of fruits, cakes, wine, incense, and “spirit money” are sent to our ancestors to express our deep respect, love, and gratitude for them.

Afterwards, I helped my dad run some errands and get supplies for the restaurant. My dad is quite shy, so when we are together he often asks me to do most of the talking; his first language is Cantonese, although his English is pretty near perfect.

My favourite funny moment from today was when a cashier was talking to me and I would pass along what he said to my dad. The owner of the store was giggling behind us and said, “I like your translation for your father. It must be a special daughter-father translation!”

The silly part is the cashier was speaking English to me and I was speaking English to my dad, so I was basically just playing telephone. I didn’t even realize it was happening 🤣

Because we spent the early years of our lives growing up in a different family, my sister and I are the only two people in our family who never grew up listening to or speaking Chinese. Most of our aunties & uncles forget that, so I’ve spent a lot of time smiling & nodding whenever our Chinese family gathers 🤭 That being said… I officially have learning Chinese on my bucket list and I hope to start learning this year! 🙌🏻

Over the past few years, I have developed more & more of a reverence for the women in my life. I stand in awe at their capacity, I am amazed at their grace, and I am so thankful for their nurturing.
