Ubuntu Collective

Ubuntu is the essence of being human, of creating community, of celebrating our interconnectedness. Everything in our collection is one-of-a-kind and handmade.

Ubuntu Collective is a partnership between a talented group of Zambian-based artists and women's collectives, and a Canadian-based lover of fair trade and social justice. Our goal is to create an international marketplace for small scale artists to sell their work, thereby providing a reliable source of income to support themselves and their families. To date, there are 8 individual artists and 3 women’s cooperatives in our collective. Our collection includes a variety of handbags, yoga bags, laptop cases, picture frames, table runners and wallets. Each purchase provides direct financial support to Zambia's people and communities; funding education initiatives for vulnerable children and providing job opportunities in disadvantaged communities. Profits from every sale are reinvested into school projects in the communities in which the artists reside, allowing young children to grow up with an education and perhaps even offering them the chance to become artists themselves. Calling all superheroes!
Every January, the super-human staff at the Kondwa Day centre and Pakachele elementary school in Lusaka buy hundreds of pairs of shoes for the 490 orphaned children who attend. A pair of school shoes is a necessary part of all Zambian school uniforms and a crucial barrier to infection during the December to March rainy season.

To help with this daunting shopping list, we are selling kids' super hero capes as a fundraiser. These adorable capes are both ready to ship and made to order and can be designed specifically for your favourite caped crusader. Claim one of the ready-made Super Kid capes and we’ll get it in the mail this week. Or order an initial cape and we’ll have it enroute by November. Whatever cape you choose, the cost is $40 and Canada-wide shipping is free.

Calling all superheroes! This spring we are honouring Heart Hero and Mighty Girl Abby Eveson. Abby was born with a rare congenital heart defect and fought a tough battle in her 5 years of life. With her family, we are honouring her life and legacy by contributing to an accessible memorial park in Schomberg, Ontario. You can help us honour this courageous mighty girl by celebrating your favourite Super Kid.

Our adorable SUPER KID capes are made to order and can be designed specifically for your favourite caped crusader. Let us know what colour the cape should be (available colours are red, blue, yellow, pink, green and light purple) and we'll ensure your personal superhero is decked out in no time. The cape fits kids between 2 and 5 years of age or the micro superhero range :)

$10 from every $35 cape will go to Abby’s memorial park fundraiser so her family can help create a community space that will inspire young and old to give back to charities that are close to their hearts.
