Spencer’s Garden Center has grown from a small family business with a small core of employees, to a staff of 18 full and part-time people. Gardening season is not over yet! 🍂 Fall is a great time to refresh your beds to help keep the soil healthy. All autumn long, root systems are still growing, organic matter is composting, and beneficial insects are getting ready for their long winter's nap! 🐞 Spencer's sells sheep & cow manure to top-dress your soil, and you can protect this happy microbiome with a layer of straw mulch. Mulch helps keep in heat, and can really make a difference in your garden's readiness come Spring. We love to use straw, as it’s easy for young shoots to get through, and lets light in to help germination!

Our new plant of the week is Artemisia ‘Boughton Silver’! It’s a great full-sun, drought-tolerant ground cover, which also tolerates salt, making it suitable for our coastal gardens! 🌊

The Artemisia Boughton Silver gets a subtle bloom midsummer, but it’s mostly desired for its soft silver foliage. There is still time to plant perennials shrubs and trees now to enjoy for next season, so stop by Spencer's to come see it!

Ever felt that garlic planting was a bit of a mystery? 🤷‍♀️ Well, we’re here to give you easy steps to having your own amazing cloves to cook with next summer!

1) Choose your timing: plant garlic around the same time as other fall bulbs, or even a little later, as long as they get a few weeks to establish roots before the full freeze. ❄
2) Prepare your beds somewhere sunny with fertile, well-draining soil, and mulch with a layer of straw. ☀
3) Separate the cloves from the bulb, identifying the pointy end where the shoot will grow up, and plant one-by-one! Water once, but not more at this stage. You may consider fertilizing with bonemeal or "bulb food" to help your bulbs get established.👨‍🌾
4) Springtime watering: garlic doesn’t like to stay too wet, so water regularly but don’t leave the ground soggy. Once the lower leaves begin to yellow, stop watering… your garlic is almost ready! 💦
5) A little nitrogen (found in bloodmeal or fish fertilizer) will go a long way to helping your garlic develop its leafy growth, and cutting the edible “scapes” (flower stalks) will help redirect energy to producing larger bulbs. 🌱
6) To harvest, remove the bulb carefully from the ground once about half of the leaves have turned yellow or brown. To store your bulbs over the winter, they must be cured: left to dry with good air circulation for 2-4 weeks with the roots & leaves still attached. 🍽

Wow! We are unfortunately out of lettuce from Coastal Grove Farm for the time being, but we have an abundance of fresh, ripe, and organic slicing tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, patty pan squash, kale, arugula, and parsley in stock at Spencer’s. Yum! 🍅 🥒 🥬
