Today was a deeply sad day in our community as we gathered to honour the short life of beloved Finn McDormand. A tender spirit, Finn cared deeply about many important things, including animals and the environment. To help honour Finn’s wishes we pitched in to gift vegan and palm oil free baked goods made with care while Marsha from Whimsy & Wild Things generously volunteered her time and created a beautiful spread of food.

We’ve known Finn’s family since our kids were small and their mom Pam worked at the cafe as a baker. Pam always showed up for community events and gatherings so we got to see Finn grow up. It is heartbreaking they are no longer on the planet and to see their family, friends, and the young people who loved Finn in pain.

We don’t do catering or share food photos or recipes anymore, it feels impossible to worry about pretty food when there is so much grief and struggle, from genocide in Gaza to the hurt in our own neighbourhoods. But sometimes grief requires a little sweetness and this was one way we knew how to support. Finn also wrestled with the pain of this world and it was good to see so many gather today to celebrate them and mourn together.

On Saturday evening there will also be a public vigil in Bridgewater for community to come together. I hope to see you there on Saturday at 7 pm in the old Canadian Tire parking lot (behind No Frills). You are invited to wear something pink.

May Finn’s memory be for a blessing and may we be moved by this tragic loss to keep loving, keep living, keep caring for each other.

The young people in our communities need us — and we need them.

We cannot allow our hearts to harden.

Take good care of yourselves but also, please, please take such good care each other.

We are so saddened to learn about the death of the beloved Reverend Barbara Minard at age 100 following a fall in Mahone Bay during one of her famous daily walks.

Reverend Barb was a regular at the cafe during our time and we have many wonderful memories of her kindness and chutzpah. During the lockdowns her cheerful face at the takeout window every day rain or shine was a blessing, and she was the first to start organizing her friends to meet for coffee outside, always bringing people together no matter what else was going on.

We loved feeding Reverend Barb her favourite birthday fishcakes and hosting her coffee dates with diverse folks from all walks of life. It was during one of those dates that we overheard Rev. Barb say something so beautiful it really stuck with us. During a coffee chat with a young person who had asked her thoughts about 2SLGBTQIA+ folks, Rev. Barb said “it is not our job to judge people, only love them.” Amen.

Rev. Barb was a beautiful soul who lived her values of community and service. Our love goes out to her family and the many people who adored her. May her memory forever be a blessing.

A celebration of Rev. Barbara’s life will be held at St. James Anglican Church, Mahone Bay, on Wednesday, July 16th at 11:00 AM, with interment to follow in Halifax.

Concerned citizens are also calling on the Town of Mahone Bay to revisit their bylaws and remove the new sidewalk patio that may have contributed to Rev. Barb’s fall. We urge the municipality and the small business community to honour Rev. Barb’s memory and legacy of age-friendly active living by working together to ensure town policy is inclusive and accessible for folks of all ages with disabilities and limited mobility. ❤️‍🩹

Things have been hard for small businesses since 2020 and no one works harder than the incredible folks Tart & Soul Cafe who have created a safe place for so many along with making the sweetest treats. Support them by contributing to their plan to downsize or sharing their fundraiser!

Today marks the start of Eid al-Adha. Every year we used to host multigenerational community potlucks & Eid celebrations. The garden would be filled with children playing in the magnolia, racing through the grass, everyone eating so very much food. Laughter and singing ringing through town. It was beautiful — a chance to experience a multiracial and intergenerational vision of community where children and their families are well fed, beloved, and protected.

According to the World Food Programme 1.9 million people are in the grips of catastrophic hunger – primarily in Gaza and Sudan. In Gaza more than 93% of children are at risk of famine. Closer to home in Nova Scotia 71,000 children are living in food insecure families based on the 2024 report card on child and family poverty from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. We can and must do better.

Every child is sacred. Every child matters. Palestinian children. Indigenous children. Black and African Nova Scotian children. Disabled children. 2SLGBTQIA+ children. Children of all beliefs and backgrounds. Every child has the right to good food, safety, housing, clean water and a caring community. Every child is our collective responsibility. Every single one, without exception.

It is hard not to despair over how cruel those with power can be to the most vulnerable, but we cannot let our hearts harden. We need each other, and community, more than ever.💞

We are so proud of this amazing young person who just happens to be our kid! Sela has been working SO hard and has almost reached their fundraising goal! Time for their last big push to raise the remaining tuition and help with travel 📖✈️🎓

Sela Graham (they/them) is a grade 10 student at Shelburne Regional High School who has been accepted to the competitive SHAD Canada program. Sela will spend a month on campus at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario this summer in an immersive STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) program. Sela has maintained grades over 90+ in every class for the last 3 years, is an active part of their community and youth leader in their school GSA, and with Our House Youth Wellness Centre.

This opportunity will help Sela in their journey to pursue a career in healthcare following in the footsteps of their grandfather and respected family physician Dr. Jack (John) Graham, their grandmother Dianne Graham who worked in the Hematology lab at the VG in Halifax, and their great grandfather Frank Graham who was a male nurse and student at the Nova Scotia Nursing Hospital in the 1930s.

To help cover the $7260 tuition Sela received a $1500 bursary from SHAD, they have been fundraising locally including helping cater a local IWD event, volunteering at a community dinner with Our House, hosting an online fundraiser and tea cup auction and finding an afterschool job at the grocery store bakery.

Sela has almost reached their fundraising goal and has less than $2000 remaining to raise to cover the rest of their tuition and travel costs.
