Joan Foster Rug Hooking

Joan Foster Rug Hooking Home based business featuring traditional hooked mats, & wall hangings, as well as patterns & other rug hooking supplies.

I learned to hook watching my mother in 1979 but really became hooked after attending class at the Rug Hooking Guild of Nova Scotia’s annual school in 1993. I have been a member of that Guild and have attended several schools since then. I am a founding member and past president of the Rug Hooking Guild of Newfoundland and Labrador. I love to teach beginner workshops and also to teach hooking with

hosiery in the Grenfell tradition. I teach regularly in Newfoundland and have also taught in Nova Scotia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Through my home-based business, I design and sell patterns as well as hook commissioned works. My rugs have been exhibited at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec as well as various other exhibits across the province. I have also received awards from the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador for the Preservation of a Traditional Craft and for Technical Skill.

Working on whale’s tail coasters today. Some people question whether they should cut a skein of yarn or ball it off. If it’s hand dyed, I prefer to cut it so that I can keep like colors together as in the sky in this one.

In honor of Mother's Day, here's my mom, my inspiration for hooking - Elva Stuckless - and a collection of some of the mats she hooked from the mid 1960's to the 1980's. These are true Newfoundland traditional mats - hooked on the old fashioned frame on burlap using recycled clothing cut with scissors. Happy Mother's Day!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!

This year in 2026 King’s Point Pottery will celebrate 34 years in business (1992-2026) and we would like to inform our customers it will also be our final year running our retail craft shop.

Yes we are retiring. We will be open for business on May 15 and closing September 27,2026.

Despite this decision we are planning for an exciting year and hope to finish on a high note.

-We will be “letting go” some “new” to the shop collector pieces (favorites from our decades of collecting)
- Our talented craft makers will be returning to refresh the shop with their newest creations
- Some new & exclusive rocks and minerals of NL and of course Labrador Labradorite jewelry will be featured
-And of course new craft makers

We invite you to celebrate with us for our final season. A big thank you to those who are unable to visit and to everyone who helped us celebrate craft and grow this region. We are so deeply grateful!

FYI: Yes it’s an end for the shop but also a new beginning for us. We are moving forward, not moving away! The retirement plan is that King’s Point will continue to be our home base.

Thank you again to all who share our passion for handmade craft and tourism.

We look forward to seeing many of you over the next 4 1\2 months.

All the best,

Linda and David
Ps: pls feel free to like and share this post.

Memories of Kettle Cove completed! Although my grandparents and this house are long gone, I’m sure they live on in the memory of the many Hopkins descendants. 15” x 19” wool fabric with a wool yarn border on linen. This one is a keeper!
