These silky webs are spun by Fall webworms (Hyphantrea cunea) which feed on leaves later in the season. The worms create these characteristic silk webs branched on the tree and can skeletonize leaves or eat the entire leaf. It overwinters in the cocoon stage as pupae in the soil. The white adult moth emerges in spring. They may weaken a tree if the tree becomes completely defoliated. These worms (caterpillars) are a tasty treat for a variety of birds and other predatory insects.
They are fairly easy to control: remove the webs you can reach by hand or with a broom. For the ones higher up, simply spray the webs and the worms with a sharp spray of plain water from the hose. Squish or stomp on the worms that fall to the ground or drown them in a pail of water.
