We started Survival Gear Canada in May 2014. We built the webstore from having 50 items for sale to what it is now with over 500 different products from leading outdoor brands.
It was a lot of fun and we decided a couple of years ago to add a retail location here at home to better serve our local customers. We finally finished working on the room and opened on Feb. 9. We should have waited because the political climate was making it harder and harder to do business. 75% of our stock comes from the USA and we were struggling with the low dollar and high shipping costs topped off by insane customs charges.
Then came the retaliatory tariffs, which we pay on everything coming into the country from the US. Our Mora and UCO supplier stated :
Some tariffs have reached up to 176%, significantly increasing the landed costs on materials like steel, aluminum, and key components. While we've worked hard to offset these through operational efficiencies and supply chain adjustments, price increases on affected products will take effect May 12th. These changes reflect the direct cost increases resulting from tariffs and are necessary top reserve our business's sustainability and the long-term value we provide.
So with this out of touch Liberal government running the country we see no end to the high cost of doing business so we have decided to close the shop and shut down Survival Gear Canada.
I would like to thank all of our customers for there loyal support over the last 11 years.
I may be down but I am not out.
Cheers,
Rod
