Choosing your first climbing rope can feel overwhelming.

You’ve taken the course, now you’re ready to invest in your own gear. Staff member, Camilo, helps you identify the key points of comparison for investing in your first climbing rope.

1 - Diameter
More durable ropes for new climbers and heavy top-roping sessions tend to be between 9.5mm - 9.8mm in diameter. Ropes in the 9.4 - 9.7mm range strike a good balance between lightweight and durability for lead climbing sport and trad, and long routes. Thinner ropes below 9.4mm are great for reducing weight and rope drag on long routes or hard red points, but can sometimes sacrifice durability.

2 - Length
Dynamic climbing ropes are most commonly sold in 60m or 70m lengths. 70m is the most common length to buy for Squamish as you will encounter some 35m rappels. If your rope is too short you could potentially climb into some dangerous situations, and if your rope is too long it can be very heavy or bulky to carry and climb with.

3 - Dry Treatment
Dry treatments help to reduce the amount of water your rope can absorb, and can also maintain the handling performance, and extend the lifespan of your rope by preventing dirt accumulation. Dry treatment does come at a cost, and it’s still recommended to use a rope tarp to keep your rope clean whenever possible.

Buying a rope is an investment, and important to your safety and performance on the rock. We love talking gear, so swing by our Squamish and Vancouver stores for personalised, expert advice from our staff!

Staff gear review: Patagonia Free Wall Pack.

For big objectives when the crux of the route is 10 pitches up, the new Free Wall Pack from keeps everything in its place.

Climb On staff member, Jason, recently used this 44L pack on ‘s new route, ‘Ballad of Rock Ridge’ (5.11d, 12 pitches) on The Chief.

“The pack fared better than I thought it would after being hauled 10+ pitches. Still just some minor scuffs.

- carries nicer than a haul bag on the approach, though not as nicely as a regular pack
- climbs decently, definitely better than a haul bag.
- hangs really nice at the belay and getting gear in/out is really easy
- hauls well, and doesn't snag on the rock”
