There is one meal you have to eat within a day of landing back in Newfoundland, and you have been thinking about it since the seatbelt sign came on.

Fish and chips from the right place. A touton with molasses. Your mother's Sunday dinner, exactly as it was, no substitutions.

What is yours, and where?

This bracelet is a plain grey stone until the sun gets involved.

Labradorite sits there grey in the shade, grey in the car, grey in the drawer. Then it catches daylight and flashes blue and green like it knew you were watching. One trick, no batteries, and it works every single day the sun comes out, which around here makes it an occasion.

Labradorite Corded Bracelet, $8.99, at 202 Water Street or online at https://rockonwater.ca/products/labradorite-corded-bracelet?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=autopilot. We ship across Canada, so the trick works in Alberta too. Save this one for the next sunny day.

The most photographed bird in Newfoundland is also the only one you are allowed to take home.

This one, specifically. It does not bite, shed, or need a permit. It is soft, it fits in a carry-on, and it fits in a shipping box, which matters when the small person is on the mainland and you are not.

Plush Puffin, $13.99, at 202 Water Street or online at https://rockonwater.ca/products/plush-puffin?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=autopilot. Ships across Canada, free over $175.

Send this to whoever has the small person.

Every Newfoundlander is the entire tourism board for a town the postcards skipped. Population tiny, opinions enormous, and the tourists drive right past it. Settle this for us. Which Newfoundland town does not get enough credit, and what should people go there for?

A bag of Storm Chips is now a Christmas ornament.

So is a kerosene lamp, a trifle, a ball of wool with the needles still in it and a red lobster. The whole kitchen you grew up in, shrunk down to hang on a tree. There is also an iceberg, which was never in the kitchen but got in anyway.

NL Faves ornaments, $5.99 each, at 202 Water Street, open seven days a week, or online at https://rockonwater.ca/collections/for-the-home?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=autopilot. Ships across Canada, free shipping over $175.

Nobody is going to explain the chips to the mainland. They can work it out.

No courtroom in this province has settled as many disputes as this board.

Newfoundland Map Crib Board, $15.99. The only map of the island with holes in it on purpose. Fifteen-two, fifteen-four, and a pair is six, followed by twenty minutes of debate over who pegged what and whether somebody moved an extra hole when nobody was looking. Works over the phone too, provided you trust the other end to count honestly. Most people do not, which is half the fun.

At 202 Water Street, seven days a week, Sundays noon to 5. Or order it here: https://rockonwater.ca/products/newfoundland-map-crib-board?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=autopilot
Ships across Canada, free shipping over $175.

Tag the person who still counts fifteen-two out loud.

The sun hits this rock before it hits anywhere else in Canada.

Cape Spear, twenty minutes from Water Street. The square lighthouse has stood there since 1836, the oldest one left in the province, and one family, the Cantwells, kept it lit for a hundred and fifty years. Below it, two Second World War guns still point at an Atlantic that never showed up. In the right months you can watch whales and icebergs from the same spot without moving your feet.

Every Newfoundlander has been dragged out here at five in the morning by somebody from away. It is worth it. Do not tell them that.

The shop at 202 Water Street is open until 5 today, no alarm clock required.

Tag the person who made you get up for the sunrise.

Your Nan was fluent in a second language, and it was not French. Half her sayings cannot be translated, only inherited. Stay where you're to till I comes where you're at. Explain that one on the mainland. What saying did your Nan or Pop use that you hardly hear any more?
