Restoration Update - Week 15

Apparently, Hillhead has been collecting roofs. 😂

We started this week thinking we had a fairly straightforward job ahead of us: remove the old shingles from the little roof over the front windows and door, make any necessary repairs, re-shingle it, and move on to the windows.

Ah, the optimism of people restoring an 1887 house (that would be us 😂).

Off came the shingles… and underneath, we found another roof.

And underneath that?

Another roof.

THREE ROOFS. One on top of the other.

The original was an old pitch-and-gravel roof. At some point, someone decided to build a new roof over the existing one. Then, sometime later, someone apparently looked at those two roofs and thought…

You know what this needs? Another roof. 😂

Well, that certainly explained why the ol’ girl had been crying buckets over her front windows!

So, this week, instead of simply re-shingling, two roofs came off, rotten wood was replaced, the original structure was repaired, and everything was properly rebuilt.

And now?

Hillhead has a brand-new brim for her lovely grey-black bonnet. 🎩

It took the better part of a week to complete a roof that looks rather small from the street, but that seems to be the way with old houses. The smallest jobs often have the biggest stories hiding underneath them!!!

We’ve had a few surprises along the way, but this one was a whopper. While part of me hopes there are no more big surprises waiting for us, another part finds them…. well, rather exciting. (Please don’t tell Dad I said that) 😂

And then, just when we thought that would be the end of Week 15…

LOOK WHAT HAPPENED!!!

A WINDOW!!! 🎉🎉🎉

After approximately two weeks of me saying “the windows are coming,” I finally have photographic evidence that I was not making it up. 😂

The very first new window is officially IN, and there it is, tucked up in the peak of Hillhead, with Tyler and Phil “ta da’ing” the moment.

One window down❤️❤️❤️

… and after all the structural work, rebuilding, roofing, waiting and surprises, seeing that first pane of glass go into this old house feels like a pretty big little milestone.

The windows aren’t coming anymore…
