🌊🐟🌿 Announcement 🌊🐟🌿

The Little Fish Store is temporarily closing to walk-in shopping, our anticipated re-open will be in the fall, likely October.

We appreciate all of the support we've received over the last year and a half and all of the wonderful fish-families we've met and helped create! As our other businesses continue to grow and flourish we are having to take a small step back from the fish store to better reevaluate our schedule. If you have placed an order with us, or are waiting for a fish in QT, we will still have them for you.

You will still be able to reach us via phone, email, or messenger if you have questions about your fish or aquariums, we are just closed to walk-in shopping at this time.

We appreciate your patience as we temporarily shift our focus ♡!

🌟 Creature Feature 🌟

○ The Honey Gourami (Trichogaster chuna) goes by a number of different common names. You’ll often hear these fish referred to as the sunset gourami, red flame gourami, or red honey gourami depending in colouration.

○ They originate from Bangladesh and India where they can be found in slow-moving streams that are rich with plants and vegetation.

○ Honey Gouramis are labyrinth fish. Fish in this group have a special labyrinth breathing organ that allows them to take in oxygen from the air at the waters surface, instead of the way most fish get dissolved oxygen through their gills.

○ The average Honey Gourami lifespan is 5-8 years. This can be impacted by the quality of care they receive as well as genetic factors. Their average adult size is approximately 2".

○ Honey Gouramis are peaceful community fish that get along with everyone. They demonstrate social behavior among themselves and with the people they come to recognize. They are intelligent and often investigate items within the tank with their feelers as if they were little arms.

○ Tankmates include: small Tetra species, Cory Cats, Rasboras, Livebearers, otocinclus, danios, other small gourmai species, loaches and small Rainbow Fish. They should not be housed with shrimp (snacks), aggressive species, or Bettas (will become Betta snacks).

🌿🌱☘️ Plant Feature ☘️🌱🌿

• Jungle vals (Vallisneria americana), also known as water celery and eelgrass, is a hardy freshwater plant that is part of the tape-grasses family. It was one of the first aquatic plants used in the hobby, and remains popular to this day.

• Jungle val grows completely submerged and roots deeply in the substrate. It is good for aquariums with fish that dig, since its deep roots make it difficult to dislodge. Because of its size, it should only be used as a background plant, and can quickly overgrow a small aquarium. We recommend tall tanks and aquariums 20 gallons or larger.

• Jungle Val is a low tech, moderate light, plant that can be grown successfully in gravel or sandy substrates. It is incredibly hardy and can adapt to most water conditions. It prefers, and grows best, in hard/alkaline water and can adapt to brackish water environments.

• It’s important to note that the crown of the plant must remain above the surface of the substrate (the crown is lighter in color than the rest of the plant). Trimming of the plant should only be done when necessary (growth is into the waters surface). They should be cut straight with sharp scissors.

🌟 Creature Feature 🌟

○ The Chili Rasbora (Boraras brigittae), also known as the Mosquito Rasbora, is native to Indonesia’s Southwestern Borneo. It is one of the smallest tropical fish found in home aquariums and suitable for nano tank environments.

○ They often occupy the top and middle levels of the water column and are easy to spot despite their small size. Although they prefer the top and middle levels, don’t be surprised if you see them swimming and eating at the bottom levels as well.

○ At an adult size of 3/4 of an inch (18mm), these vibrant little fish are truly classified as nano fish. Male Chili Rasboras can be distinguished from females by looking at their dorsal and a**l fins, where the males have bright red striping.

○ To encourage the best colouration, Chili Rasboras are most comfortable in planted aquariums with dark substrate. Fine texture sand or gravel is ideal for these nano fish. In their natural environment in Borneo, they make their home in blackwater streams and pools, so the dark substrate will meet their inclination for the dark bottom.

○ Tankmates include: Amano shrimp, dwarf shrimp species, bamboo shrimp, corydoras catfish, neon tetras, sparkling gouramis, galaxy rasboras, and other nano tank species. They should not be housed with large or aggressive fish.

🌟 Creature Feature 🌟

○ Nerite snails, (Neritidae family) live in both freshwater and saltwater. They are found along coastlines on the Atlantic, Indian and pacific oceans. In the wild, most nerites live along coastlines where rivers empty into the ocean. They migrate between fresh and brackish water as they feed, grow and reproduce. Adults measure 1 inch, with females being slightly larger. Healthy nerites live up to 2 years.

○ They are great additions to many tanks. Due to their proficiency at cleaning many types of algae, they are wonderful additions to most cleanup crews. When they've cleaned all the algae, their diet can be supplemented with kale, spinach, or cucumber until the algae returns. They will not bother live plants.

○ Nerite snails are peaceful herbivores that tend not to bother their tankmates. As a result of their gentle nature and small size, they can become prey to large, aggressive fish. Care should be taken when introducing them to a tank.

○ These invertebrates are skilled climbers, so they sometimes escape from the tank. Invest in a tight-fitting lid for your tank to avoid your nerite snail escaping. They do like to occasionally emerge from the waters surface and can be seen cruising along the surface of the glass/lid as they clean.

○ Tankmates include: small Tetras species (Neon, Ember, Red-Eye, Emperor) Cory Cats, Rasboras, Platies, otocinclus, guppies, bettas (depending on temperament) and shrimp. They should not be housed with larger aggressive fish.
