We've watched neighbours help neighbours, businesses open their doors, strangers offer places for animals, meals for evacuees and whatever they have to give.

We've been checking in with our community today, and we're grateful to hear from so many who are safe - while keeping those directly affected close in our thoughts.

As the needs of Summerland become clearer, the Summerland District Market is here to listen, connect and help wherever we meaningfully can.

WILDFIRE UPDATE: The Bald Range Wildfire west of Summerland continued its rapid expansion overnight and now measures 9,500 hectares in size.

BC Wildfire Service says the fire continues to showcase rank five fire behaviour and is still incredibly dangerous and volatile as winds carry embers up to a kilometre ahead of the blaze.

Air tankers worked to drop fire retardants as a way to protect structures in the fire however, the previously mentioned conditions compromised those efforts.

Structure Protection crews remained on scene overnight in an effort to protect buildings in the area.

The fire caused an evacuation order for more than 12,000 people in the District of Summerland late last night, with evacuees being asked to report to either the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre or Lions Hall in Westbank.

Highway 97 between Peachland and the Pyramid Picnic Area (Kickininee Provincial Park) remains closed.

An EVACUATION ORDER has been issued for properties in the Brent Road area, south of Peachland. Residents on evacuation order should leave their properties immediately to keep safe. Residents must evacuate to the north.
Specific addresses are as follows:
7210 Brent Road to 7100 Brent Road
7280 HWY 97S to 6801 HWY 97S
307 Log Chute Road to 303 Log Chute Road

Our hearts are with Summerland and the surrounding communities tonight. ❤️

Watching this fire grow so quickly has been incredibly difficult, and we know there are families facing uncertainty, evacuations and a very long night ahead.

To the firefighters, first responders, emergency crews and everyone working to protect the community. Thank you.

- I picked up the most amazing photograph of a bear, it took me back to a time I was on a hike and crossed a bear. The bear was hunched behind a log just like this one.
