Kundalini Awakening, Crystals, and Learning to Live With Sensitivity
My journey with crystals began as a child because they were beautiful and I found them fascinating. Then life took over.
30 years later, that crystal journey began again because I was overwhelmed.
During my kundalini awakening, I became intensely aware of energy. I could feel sensations moving through my body, vibrations within objects and spaces, shifts in people’s emotions, and frequencies that I did not yet understand. What initially felt magical quickly became difficult to manage. My sensitivity became so strong that functioning in everyday life sometimes felt almost impossible.
Kundalini awakening is often described as an activation of spiritual energy that begins to move through the body and consciousness. For some, it may feel peaceful and expansive. For others, it can be confusing, emotional, physically intense, and deeply disruptive.
Some commonly reported experiences may include waves of heat or cold, tingling, pressure, trembling, spontaneous body movements, unusual sensations along the spine, vivid dreams, heightened intuition, emotional releases, increased sensitivity to sound, light, people, places, and energy, changes in sleep, a desire for solitude, and a feeling that your old identity is beginning to fall away.
It can also bring unresolved emotions and old wounds to the surface. Awakening is not always about feeling blissful or “high vibe.” Sometimes it is about meeting the parts of ourselves that are asking to be witnessed, understood, and gently healed.
Crystals became one of the tools that helped me begin navigating this new sensitivity.
I used grounding stones when I felt scattered or overstimulated. I reached for calming crystals when my nervous system felt overwhelmed. Other stones helped me feel supported while processing emotions, strengthening my boundaries, and learning how to remain connected to myself without absorbing everything around me.
Black tourmaline, smoky quartz, hematite, obsidian, and red jasper can be beautiful companions for grounding and stability. Amethyst, lepidolite, howlite, and blue lace agate may offer a sense of calm during periods of emotional or energetic intensity. Clear quartz can help bring awareness and intention to the journey, although I personally believe highly amplifying stones should be used mindfully when someone is already feeling overstimulated.
Crystals did not “fix” my awakening. They became anchors. They reminded me to slow down, breathe, listen to my body, and reconnect with the physical world.
Over the years, I learned that my sensitivity was not something I needed to fear or completely shut off. I needed to learn how to work with it. That included clearing and supporting my physical body, tending to my nervous system, processing emotions, setting energetic boundaries, resting, grounding, and learning when to step away from spiritual practices and simply be human.
My sensitivity is still part of who I am, but it no longer controls every moment of my life. What once felt unbearable has gradually become something I can understand, regulate, and use with greater discernment.
It is also important to remember that physical or emotional symptoms should never automatically be assumed to be spiritual. Experiences connected with anxiety, sleep disruption, pain, changes in mood, or unusual physical sensations may also have medical causes. Seeking professional support does not make your spiritual experience any less meaningful. Caring for the body and mind is part of the journey too.
For anyone moving through an awakening, you do not need to rush the process or force yourself to open more quickly. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is eat a nourishing meal, place your feet on the earth, hold a grounding stone, take a deep breath, and remind yourself:
I am here. I am safe in my body. I am allowed to move through this slowly.
